Job Summary:
The ICU In-Charge Nurse is responsible for the overall coordination, supervision, and management of the Intensive Care Unit. This role involves leading the ICU nursing team, ensuring high-quality patient care, implementing nursing protocols, and maintaining compliance with hospital and accreditation standards.
Key Responsibilities:1. Clinical Supervision
- Oversee daily operations and nursing care delivery within the ICU.
- Ensure adherence to critical care protocols, infection control practices, and patient safety guidelines.
- Provide hands-on nursing care in complex or emergency situations.
2. Team Management
- Supervise and support ICU nursing staff, including staff allocation, shift management, and daily assignments.
- Monitor staff performance, maintain discipline, and coordinate training needs.
- Facilitate ongoing clinical skill development and mentorship for junior staff.
3. Patient Care Coordination
- Coordinate with ICU consultants, intensivists, and other healthcare professionals for comprehensive patient care.
- Ensure timely documentation of patient care activities and handovers.
- Monitor critically ill patients and ensure appropriate nursing interventions are carried out.
4. Administrative Duties
- Maintain ICU inventory, including critical care medications, disposables, and equipment.
- Participate in audits, quality improvement activities, and infection control rounds.
- Ensure timely maintenance and calibration of ICU equipment (ventilators, monitors, etc.).
5. Compliance and Quality
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, statutory regulations, and accreditation requirements (e.g., NABH).
- Report and document any incidents, near misses, or adverse events as per protocol.
- Maintain accurate patient records, nurse reports, and unit logs.
Educational Qualifications:
- Required: GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) or B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized institution.
- Preferred: Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing or Critical Care Nursing certification.
Licensure & Registration:
- Must be registered with the State Nursing Council (Valid Registration Number Required).
Experience Required:
- Minimum 5 years of total nursing experience, with at least 2 years in an ICU setting.
- Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory role (e.g., ICU Team Leader or Assistant in Charge) preferred.
- Experience working in a multi-specialty hospital or NABH-accredited institution is desirable.
Skills & Competencies:
- Strong clinical decision-making and patient assessment skills.
- Effective team leadership and conflict resolution abilities.
- Proficiency in using ICU equipment (ventilators, monitors, infusion pumps).
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of infection control, biomedical waste management, and ICU protocols.
Working Conditions:
- Must be available for rotational shifts, including night duties and emergencies.
- Physically demanding role involving long hours, critical decision-making, and emotional resilience.
- Exposure to infectious diseases and high-risk situations is inherent to the ICU environment.
