ICU Staff Nurse – Roles and Responsibilities
Primary Role:
An ICU Staff Nurse provides specialized care for critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). They monitor patient health, administer treatments, and support both patients and their families while working closely with doctors and other healthcare professionals.

- Patient Monitoring
- Continuously monitor vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen levels).
- Detect early signs of deterioration and respond accordingly.
- Use advanced monitoring equipment like ventilators, infusion pumps, and cardiac monitors.
- Administering Treatments
- Administer medications, intravenous fluids, and nutrition as prescribed.
- Assist in procedures such as intubation, catheter insertion, and wound care.
- Maintain sterile techniques to prevent infections.
- Critical Care Support
- Provide care to patients requiring mechanical ventilation, cardiac support, or other life-saving interventions.
- Manage emergency situations such as cardiac arrest or respiratory distress.
- Document patient conditions and interventions accurately.
- Collaboration and Communication
- Work alongside doctors, physiotherapists, and other specialists to create and implement care plans.
- Update family members on patient conditions and treatment progress.
- Participate in case discussions and ward rounds.
- Patient Comfort and Emotional Support
- Provide psychological support to patients and their families.
- Educate patients and families about care processes and treatment plans.
- Ensure patient comfort, hygiene, and dignity.
- Infection Control
- Adhere to strict infection prevention protocols.
- Handle biohazard waste and follow hospital guidelines for cleaning and disinfection.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Keep detailed patient records including treatments, medication schedules, and changes in condition.
- Report any adverse events or complications to senior medical staff immediately.
- Training and Development
- Keep updated with the latest ICU care practices.
- Participate in continuous professional development programs.
