Job Summary: The In-Charge Pharmacist will be responsible for supervising the overall operations of the OP Pharmacy, ensuring safe and effective dispensing of medications, compliance with legal and regulatory guidelines, and smooth workflow of the pharmacy team. The role requires strong knowledge of pharmaceutical procedures, inventory management, statutory compliance, and excellent patient counseling skills.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Prescription & Patient Care

  • Review, verify and execute physician prescriptions ensuring legality, dosage accuracy, and therapeutic compatibility.
  • Counsel patients on medication usage, dosage schedule, interactions, and side effects.
  • Handle emergency/critical prescriptions promptly and correctly.
  • Maintain patient privacy, data integrity, and ensure ethical practice.

Dispensing & Drug Management

  • Prepare, dispense, compound, pack, and label medicines as per protocols.
  • Ensure availability of essential, emergency & high-demand drugs at all times.
  • Monitor drug therapies and coordinate with physicians for clarifications when required.
  • Maintain cold-chain drugs and temperature-sensitive medications appropriately.

Pharmacy Operations & Administration

  • Organize the pharmacy layout for easy identification and efficient workflow.
  • Maintain and update stock report, sales invoice & all transaction records without delay.
  • Coordinate with purchase department for timely indenting and replenishment.
  • Prepare daily closing reports and submit account statements to Accounts Department.
  • Maintain duty schedule, supervise pharmacist team performance & ensure discipline.
  • Train new staff on pharmacy processes, customer service, and documentation.

Inventory & Compliance

  • Maintain optimum stock levels and ensure FIFO/FEFO method in stock handling.
  • Identify near-expiry items and initiate timely return to central store.
  • Conduct weekly/monthly stock audits and annual closing audits.
  • Ensure compliance with Kerala State Pharmacy Council, NABH standards & Hospital policies.
  • Maintain records related to narcotics/controlled drugs as per regulatory guidelines.
  • Ensure proper storage conditions, batch tracking, and barcoding where applicable.

Quality, Customer Service & Coordination

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and infection-controlled pharmacy environment.
  • Address patient complaints related to pharmacy services and resolve professionally.
  • Coordinate with doctors, nurses, and departments for smooth patient service.
  • Monitor billing accuracy & prevent pilferage, wastage, or stock discrepancies.
  • Implement cost-effective strategies to control pharmacy operational expenses.
  • Stay updated on new drugs, availability changes, and market variations.

Professional Development

  • Attend training programs/workshops to enhance pharmaceutical knowledge.
  • Keep updated with regulatory guidelines, drug policies, and best practices.
  • Participate in hospital quality initiatives and contribute to continuous improvement.

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of drug legislation, pharmacy protocols, and statutory compliance.
  • Excellent communication and counseling skills.
  • Ability to manage team operations, maintain records, and handle audits efficiently.
  • Detail-oriented, responsible, and capable of managing pharmacy independently.
