The Industrial Controls Specialist – HVAC is responsible for the installation, programming, maintenance, and troubleshooting of building automation systems (BAS) and industrial control systems (ICS) that support heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) operations. This role ensures optimal system performance, energy efficiency, and compliance with applicable codes and standards in complex facility environments.

Responsibilities

Major Job Activities:

  • Install, program, and calibrate HVAC control systems including DDC, PLC, and SCADA-based platforms.
  • Integrate new control systems with existing BAS infrastructure (e.g., Siemens, Johnson Controls, Trane, Honeywell).
  • Maintain and troubleshoot HVAC control systems, building automation systems (BAS), and industrial automation equipment.
  • Perform root cause analysis on control system failures and HVAC performance issues.
  • Utilize software tools and field instruments to diagnose and resolve sensor, actuator, and communication faults.
  • Adjust setpoints, schedules, and sequences of operation to align with operational needs and energy goals.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Calibrate sensors and instruments such as temperature, pressure, and flow devices.
  • Document system changes and maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs.
  • Assist in training lower-level operators and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver license
  • Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Technology, or related field.
  • Experience: Must have a minimum of five (5) years of experience specializing in ICS or instrumentation and controls (I&C).
  • Certifications (preferred):
    • Niagara AX/N4 Certification
    • Tridium, Siemens, or Johnson Controls factory training
  • OSHA 30, EPA 608
  • Must be able to pass a favorable national agency check (NAC)
Required Skills

  • Technical proficiency in electronics, electrical systems, and mechanical components.
  • Experience with PLC programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens) and BAS platforms (e.g., Trane, Johnson Controls).
  • PLC logic and HMI interface design.
  • Electrical troubleshooting and low-voltage wiring
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for diagnosing complex system issues.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills for coordinating with teams and documenting work.
