Information & Research Services Manager

Objective of the position:

The Information & Research Services Manager oversees implementation, development and evaluation of all adult and teen programs and services for Main Library. The Information & Research Services Manager is responsible for the planning and provision of information services to adults and teens including; reference, reader’s advisory services, outreach services, adult programming, and technology. This individual maintains responsibility for the development of adult nonfiction/fiction, teen, and reference collections in all formats. They also supervise a team of Reference Librarians and/or Assistants. The Information & Research Services Manager works with each department in the library to provide materials and excellent customer service to all customers. The Manager aligns location initiatives with strategic and tactical plans.

Supervisory responsibilities:

· Hiring/Firing: Participate in search process and make recommendations to Library Director in the hiring of professional Librarians, Outreach staff, Assistants and contract Technology Trainers for the Information Services Department.

· Training: Oversee and/or conducts formal and informal training with Information staff in the provision of quality information services to customers. Recommends professional development for all staff

· Work Review/Revision: Assists in coordinating information services throughout the organization. Directs the work of and sets priorities for all Reference Information Services staff at Main Library.

· Evaluation: Conduct annual evaluations of all direct reports.

· Discipline and Counseling: Responsible for discipline and counseling of direct reports.

Job Summary:

· Manage, train, schedule and coach Information Services and Outreach staff

· Sets individual performance measurements for staff and holds them accountable

· Responsibilities include hiring, orienting, coaching, managing and evaluating assigned team

· Regularly travels to branch location to support collection management and program development, trainings and outreach

· Assists customers in locating appropriate library materials

· Instructs and assists customers in the use of public catalogs

· Performs in-depth reference service in person, telephone, and e-mail

· Organizes and supervises maintenance of special files

· Locates and applies for grants, including meeting all the reporting requirement deadlines of each grant

· Prepare bibliographies and book lists

· Conduct tours and library presentations

· Represents library in the community by partnering with appropriate organizations, coordinated events with community partners, and speaking on behalf of the library with various media outlets when necessary

· Contracting of outside groups or persons to conduct adult and teen programs

· Plans, executes and/or supervises programs for adults and teens; as well as, planning and teaching classes for computer literacy

· Works with Executive Manager - Community Engagement to promote adult and teen materials and programs to appropriate public

· Works with members of the Information Services Department, Youth Services Department and the Executive Manager - Community Engagement to develop social media outreach

· Works with IT Specialist to recommend emerging technologies to the Administrative staff

· Proctors exams for distance learning students

· Coordinates notary services for all library locations Acts as primary point of contact and coordinates activities with other organizations in the community providing services to adults and teens

· Selections and oversees development of collections for adult non-fiction/fiction and teen materials in all formats; as well as making recommendations for other material genres and formats

· Recommends and implements library policies and procedures specific to department goals

· Acts as Person-In-Charge (PIC) when needed

· Oversee preparation of monthly and yearly department reports

· Participate in the Central Library Consortium at appropriate level

· Participates in appropriate Ohio Library division activities

· Participates with management team members in development of annual action plan

· Monitors journal, electronic discussion groups, website and other organizations to keep current with trends in the reference, adult services and technology fields

· Checks e-mail frequently

· Participates in at least one Pickerington Community Outreach event per year (parades, OPVBA, festivals, etc.)

· Demonstrates understanding of basic library routines and complies with library policies and procedures and make sure adult services staff comply

· Prepares and manages budgets as assigned

· Assists in public service areas as needed

· Performs additional duties as assigned including leading and serving on tactical projects

Position Requirements:

  • MLS (MLIS) from an American Library Association accredited school
  • 3 years of progressively responsible professional library experience
  • Proven management and supervisory skills
  • Competency in the use of current computer hardware and software
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Maintains professional, businesslike behavior and appearance
  • Sound judgment and strong professional ethics
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving library customers and residents of the community
  • Must maintain insurability under the Library’s vehicle liability insurance coverage. Must maintain valid driver’s license, personal vehicle and acceptable driving record. May drive PPL vehicle if called upon.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk and hear. The employee must be able to lift up to 20 pounds and push a 50-pound cart. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Environmental factors: indoor/outdoor -offsite

Working conditions: Library operating/non-operating hours including nights and weekends.

Pay: $50,946.00 - $75,795.20 per year
