Inpatient Head Nurse

Job Summary:

Directs and supervises functions and activities in the in-patient area, interprets and implements policies, procedures, standards and regulations to personnel, patients, medical staff and public. Performs duties in any nursing capacity as needed.


Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Organizes and directs functions and activities in medical care unit.Interprets and implements established policies, procedures, regulations to personnel, patients, medical staff and public. Utilizes personnel efficiently and assures cost effective utilization of supplies and equipment. Demonstrates care and safety measures and procedures. Plans and directs unit routines. Monitors workflow and productivity. Evaluates unit performance and effect changes as needed to improve services.
  • Directs and supervises nursing staff. Orients, trains, instructs personnel and may participate in in-service education. Assigns duties. Evaluates work performance. Solves problems and grievances and maintains good employee relations. Provides counsel and guidance to staff.
  • Inspects the unit regularly for compliance with unit/department policies, procedures, regulations, standards and takes corrective action when violations occur. Maintains patient rights and compliance with hospital communication code. Assures proper maintenance of patient’s medical records and confidential treatment of patient information.
  • Analyzes unit needs, studies new trends and developments and offers recommendations to nursing administration.
  • Performs tasks such as the following:
  • Receives and gives report.
  • Makes assignments, gives instructions, arranges for meals and breaks.
  • Reports staff shortages to nursing administration and adjusts work schedule accordingly.
  • Supervises personnel.
  • Makes rounds.
  • Visits each patient and assesses patient’s condition and care given.
  • Answers questions, and evaluates patient needs.
  • Develops and adjusts patient care plans in cooperation with staff nurses.
  • Assures observance of required techniques (aseptic, sterile, isolation) in nursing care.
  • Makes rounds with physicians, gives and obtains information, organizes supply and dressing needs, assists physicians with examinations and treatments and carries out physicians’ orders.
  • Assures continuous and correct identification of all patients in the unit.
  • Assures that unit charting is complete and accurate and patient records are updated.
  • Assures that care plans are fulfilled and assists with discharge planning.
  • Instructs patients and families with patient care and after discharge adjustment.
  • Refers patient/families to appropriate resources as needed in cooperation with social services.
  • Takes corrective action when violation of policies and procedures occur.
  • Coordinates inpatient area functions with other nursing units and other hospital departments. Maintains good interdepartmental relations and public relations.
  • Directs care and maintenance of equipment and supplies. Requisition of unit supplies and equipment. Checks for sterility, out dating and defects and disposes of or reports to supervisor, as is appropriate. Removes defective equipment from use. Documents maintenance and reports. Checks narcotics and complies with regulations concerning use and storage. Directs and participates in unit cleaning activities (facilities and equipment).
  • Conducts Performance Appraisals and Competency Assessments for all In-Patient Nursing Team.
  • Maintains established hospital policies, procedures, objectives, quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control.


Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required :

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree (BSN).
  • Valid nursing license from the country of origin.
  • Previous clinical nursing experience minimum of 3 years' with managerial skills.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Good verbal and written English communication skills.
