As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University seeks an Instructional Designer for Online Programs who'll manage course development/design processes, evaluates course design, and applies best practices related to teaching and learning in a university setting. The Online Instructional Designer will manage their workflow of online course development and instructional design with the Executive Director of Innovation, Academic Innovation Team staff and online faculty and campus partners for consultations and training sessions, and reviews and documents course development and other services provided.

The Online Instructional Designer performs instructional design work, facilitates online faculty learning courses/modules, and develops and delivers virtual workshops, maintains an online community of faculty resources, and provides college/department outreach on topics related to college teaching. The Online Instructional Designer works closely with the Executive Director, the Online Academic Innovation Team, Center for Teaching and Learning, and other campus partners, academic leaders and program directors; provides work progress reports, maintains instructional design records, and communicates with stakeholders to promote collaboration and accountability, helping to clearly define the work and all stakeholders’ role in the work. The position supports online faculty, directors and staff to deliver and maintain high-quality, online learning experiences and work as a collaborative team with other university professionals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.
  • Assist the Executive Director of Innovation, Academic Innovation Team in managing and supervising the design and review of high-quality online courses.
  • Design, develop, and implement program’s online course templates, guidelines, and initiatives
  • Establish consistent quality standards, look and feel, template design, and user experience across programs and courses
  • Assist in working with faculty to redesign or revise existing courses
  • Manage, supervise, and assist in training faculty to design and facilitate courses
  • Conduct annual reviews of online courses to ensure high-quality design and rigor calculators.
  • Work with staff, the online faculty teams, subject matter experts, and other university professionals to ensure rigorous content and to include effective instructional practices.
  • Provide instructional support, as needed and within capacity, to other colleges at Marian University
  • Provide individual consultations and support to online faculty, as well as ongoing development efforts through design and delivery of workshops and other forms of faculty development to be determined
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, attending training and/or courses as agreed to with supervisors
  • Attend departmental and interdepartmental meetings
  • Mentors' instructors through the design, development, and facilitation of courses
  • Consults with individual instructors regarding their courses
  • Ensures alignment of learning outcomes with content, activities, and assessment in courses
  • Applies project management, communication, and problem-solving skills in the design of all courses to meet deadlines
  • Assist with administrative tasks
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by Executive Director and Assistant Vice President of Online Programs

Educational Requirements:

  • To be qualified for this position the candidate must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; entry level experience related to course design; an understanding of objective-based curriculum design and experience with Canvas Learning Management System and implementing innovative technologies
  • A Master’s degree in instructional design or educational technology is preferred.
