Instrumentation and Automation Engineer

An Instrumentation and Automation Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, installing, managing, and maintaining systems that measure, monitor, and control industrial processes. These engineers ensure that machinery and production systems operate efficiently, safely, and accurately through automated control and instrumentation.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop instrumentation and control systems for industrial processes (e.g., oil & gas, manufacturing, power plants, pharmaceuticals).
  • Select appropriate sensors, transmitters, controllers, and automation equipment.
  • Configure, program, and troubleshoot PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), DCS (Distributed Control Systems), and SCADA systems.
  • Calibrate and maintain instruments such as pressure, temperature, flow, and level sensors.
  • Develop control logic, loop diagrams, and wiring diagrams.
  • Monitor system performance and optimize automation processes for efficiency and reliability.
  • Conduct testing, commissioning, and validation of automation systems.
  • Diagnose faults and implement corrective and preventive maintenance.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, industry regulations, and quality requirements.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and operations teams.
  • Prepare technical documentation, reports, and standard operating procedures.

Required Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of control systems, instrumentation, and automation technologies
  • Experience with PLCs, SCADA, and DCS platforms
  • Understanding of sensors, transmitters, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP)
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams)
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of industrial safety standards

Typical Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
  • Relevant certifications or hands-on experience with automation systems is often preferred

Work Environment:

  • Industrial plants, manufacturing facilities, or energy sectors
  • May involve fieldwork, site visits, and occasional troubleshooting in operational environments
