JOB SUMMARY
The Public Services Department Data Science/Data Analyst Intern performs administrative and field work to assist with and implement Mount Pleasant's Asset Management programs and other initiatives undertaken by the Public Services Department. This internship provides practical experience in collecting information on multiple town-owned assets, using data analysis to create dashboards, maps, and other interactive products for public outreach and education, and exposure to other municipal processes.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Assists in all aspects of the implementation of the Town's Asset Management programs, including data collection, data organization, data analysis, data packaging, data display, public education and outreach, and construction/project management.
  • Conducts field investigations and data analysis of Town assets that include stormwater infrastructure, facilities, sidewalks, trails, parks, and athletic fields.
  • Prepares and/or processes various data sets using the Town’s database systems.
  • Coordinates, inspects, tracks, and conducts investigations to make recommendations for asset maintenance and planning.
  • Develop dashboards, maps, and reports to support communication with stakeholders and the public.
  • Assists Town staff with interpreting data trends, conducting field investigations, and planning future informational products.
  • Obtains, reviews, analyzes, and reports on data from technical reports and makes recommendations for future analytic work and proposed formats.
  • Attends relevant Town meetings and events as applicable.
  • Receives, maintains, communicates, and coordinates various data, records, and reports, including asset locations, ownership, conditions, and construction plans.
  • Works under the guidance of the Asset Analyst.
  • Performs other duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
  • High School Diploma
  • Some college-level coursework in data science, data analysis, GIS/mapping, engineering, or construction management required.
  • Currently enrolled in college or graduate courses in a related field
  • Valid South Carolina Driver's License
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of applicable computer programs and databases;
  • Skill in the use of verbal, visual and written communication;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a detailed and accurate manner;
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, professionals and the public;
  • Skill in MS Office, ArcGIS, Canva
  • Ability to learn new systems and programs in a fast-paced environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The work requires some agility and physical strength, such as moving over rough terrain, carrying equipment on slopes, or standing or walking most of the work period. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks. There may also be some occasional lifting of objects such, manhole covers and water quality equipment (up to 50 lbs.). There may be need to stretch and reach to retrieve materials. Travel or work particularly during adverse weather conditions and troublesome road conditions may be requested.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of offices, with occasional exposure to outside elements for special inspections, events, or activities. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant. Work may also involve occasional mental stress, such as completing several unrelated tasks within a relatively short period of time. Field work will be necessary. Some travel is required. A Town vehicle will be provided for field work during business hours. Employee may be required to work beyond normal business hours for Town special events, or to attend evening meetings.
