Summary

CAPES Doctoral Program for International Research Mobility (PDSE). PDSE is a program supported by the CAPES Foundation, an agency under the Ministry of Education of Brazil, in which second/third-year PhD students carry part of their research in a collaborating laboratory outside of Brazil. Intern/aide will receive research training pertinent to addressing the main hypotheses of the research proposal. This includes training in experimental design, protocol execution, data interpretation, and manuscript preparation. Intern/aide will also receive instruction in public presentation of the scientific findings in the form of poster presentations and oral talks to scientific audiences.

Job Duties

  • Designs well-formulated hypotheses pertinent to the proposed studies.
  • Learns key research protocols that includes mouse handling/husbandry, mouse allergen challenge via the airway.
  • Collects mouse organs that includes bronchoalveolar lavage and whole lung, cell isolation from mouse tissues, tissue culture, conventional and confocal microscopy, and many others.
  • Learns how to analyze graph and otherwise present scientific data suitable for publication data.
  • Plans and conducts bench experiments.
  • Analyzes, writes and presents experimental results focusing on the role of eosinophils in killing fungi linked to allergic diseases.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in high school or be a high school graduate (or equivalent secondary education) or enrolled in an institution of higher education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA or BS degree.
  • Current enrollment in a microbiology or immunology or related PhD program with 1-2 years of experience.
  • Limited (< 1 year) experience with experimental design and technical writing.
  • Has fluency in English.
