Job Description
Investigative Support Officer – Cold Case (Homicide) Unit
Are you analytical, detail-oriented, and motivated by investigative work that supports long-term case resolution? Join CPD as an Investigative Support Officer within the Cold Case (Homicide) Unit and contribute to the continued advancement of complex, long-term homicide investigations.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive review and analysis of cold case homicide files
- Organize, digitize, and modernize historical investigative records for accessibility and case development
- Identify previously overlooked leads, inconsistencies, and investigative opportunities
- Reassess physical and biological evidence in coordination with forensic partners and laboratories
- Apply current forensic advancements, including DNA databases and analytical tools, to historical cases
- Collaborate with detectives, regional cold case investigators, and task forces
- Prepare clear, detailed investigative summaries and case documentation to support follow-up actions
- Support case prioritization and structured review of long-term unsolved homicides
What We’re Looking For
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to evaluate complex case information
- Ability to identify patterns, inconsistencies, and investigative leads within large volumes of data
- High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in documentation and review
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage sensitive, confidential, and historical case information with discretion
- Experience or interest in criminal investigations, forensic analysis, or investigative research preferred
Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: High School diploma, GED/HSE or equivalent, completion of a DCJS certified law enforcement academy. Concentration in Psychology, Criminal Justice, or Administration of Justice preferred.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: Two or more years experience as a law enforcement officer
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:VCIN/NCIC certified operator (may be obtained after hired)
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
