Investment Securities Trader

Alphastar Capital Management is seeking an experienced Investment Securities Trader to join our growing investment team. This role is responsible for implementing portfolio changes and executing trades across client accounts in a retail wealth management and RIA environment, ensuring portfolios remain aligned with approved models and strategies.

We are open to a range of experience levels but are specifically seeking candidates with experience trading in RIA, TAMP, or retail investment management platforms who demonstrate strong execution discipline, sound judgment, and the ability to operate accurately in a high-volume, multi-account setting. Experience with Orion Eclipse or comparable trading and portfolio systems is strongly preferred.

This role plays a key part in supporting Independent Financial Advisors by delivering consistent, high-quality portfolio implementation for private wealth clients nationwide.

Position Summary

The Investment Securities Trader is responsible for executing trades across client portfolios to maintain alignment with approved allocations, models, and investment strategies. The role requires precision, focus, and sound trading judgment, particularly when balancing execution timing, liquidity considerations, and tax awareness in a retail client environment.

The trader works closely with the Head of Trading, CIO, and Investment Team to implement rebalances, cash flows, and model updates while supporting the ongoing development of scalable, best-practice trading processes.


Key Responsibilities

  • Execute trades across client accounts in accordance with approved investment models, portfolio guidelines, and advisor-directed strategies
  • Collaborate with the Head of Trading, CIO, and Investment Team to implement rebalances, model changes, and cash-driven activity
  • Review, process, and execute purchases and sales of securities including ETFs, mutual funds, equities, fixed income, structured products, and alternative investments
  • Apply sound trading judgment with respect to liquidity, bid/ask spreads, market conditions, wash-sale considerations, and tax efficiency
  • Coordinate trade execution, settlement, and reconciliation with custodians including Schwab, Fidelity, and similar retail custodians
  • Monitor and resolve trade exceptions, allocation issues, and failed or partial fills
  • Support money movement activity (contributions, distributions, transfers) as it relates to portfolio implementation
  • Ensure all trading activity complies with firm policies, best-execution standards, and applicable securities regulations
  • Participate in periodic account reviews, trading audits, and continuous improvement of trading workflows and controls


Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience trading in an RIA, TAMP, or retail investment management environment
  • Hands-on experience with Orion Eclipse strongly preferred; familiarity with Tamarac, Envestnet, Black Diamond, or similar platforms also relevant and helpful
  • Strong understanding of retail investment securities and trading mechanics, including equities, ETFs, mutual funds, and fixed income
  • Working knowledge of model-based portfolio management, asset allocation, and portfolio construction
  • Demonstrated trader mindset with a focus on accuracy, risk control, and error prevention
  • Ability to manage high trade volumes across many accounts while maintaining focus and attention to detail
  • Strong proficiency in Excel and technology tools, with an interest in improving workflows and automation
  • Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills. Sound judgment in a regulated, client-centric environment


Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Trading experience in a retail RIA, TAMP, OCIO platform, or wealth management firm
  • Experience level flexible; candidates must demonstrate the ability to add immediate value through execution quality, reliability, and judgment


Compensation & Benefits

  • Full-time position based in Cornelius, NC
  • Hybrid schedule available (up to 2 days per week remote)
  • Remote candidates with exceptional fit may be considered
  • Compensation commensurate with experience
