Job Summary/Basic Functions

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a federally mandated committee for institutions involved in research with human participants; it serves as a screening unit to review, evaluate, and make recommendations relative to research proposals that utilize human subjects. Under broad supervision and guidance from a faculty administrator, the IRB specialist is responsible for a complex range of activities for the Office of Research Services including, but not limited to: conducting pre-reviews of submissions to the IRB, including new protocols, continuing reviews, modifications, and unanticipated problems; attending IRB meetings and providing support to the IRB Chair and IRB Members, including writing and editing minutes of meetings; conducting quality control functions and post-approval monitoring; delivering relevant education programs; optimizing and streamlining departmental processes; and supervising and training IRB Coordinators and student helpers;. The incumbent also ensures compliance with federal regulations involving both Public Health Service and the Food & Drug Administration.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor's

Required Field of Study: Business, administration, healthcare, scientific field, public health, information technology or a directly related field from an accredited institution

Number of years required to perform the job: Analyst 1 - 2 years, Analyst 2 - 4 years, Analyst 3 - 6 years

Type of experience required to perform the job: Work experience in scientific or medical research, administrative support, healthcare, legal or regulatory compliance, or related areas. Analyst 2 & 3 requires at least 2 & 4 years of IRB experience respectively.

Substitution: Master's or Doctorate Degree will substitute for 2 years of non IRB-related professional experience or one year of IRB-related experience; or Bachelor's degree in a non-related field will be accepted with at least 4 years of direct experience in Human Subject research, IRB or medical research ethics
