Irrigation Specialist

POSITION: Irrigation Specialist

REPORTS TO: Landscaping Supervisor

SUMMARY: To ensure and support the timely completion of all landscaping projects.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Design, install, and maintain irrigation systems across all district properties. This includes drip, rotor, pop up, and other specialized irrigation systems.
  • Implement and manage smart rain technology irrigation control systems to optimize water usage and efficiency.
  • Conduct repair and preventive maintenance of main lines, valves, pumps, blow irrigation lines out for winter and filter systems to ensure longevity and efficient operation.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve various issues with irrigation systems, including leaks, breaks, and system malfunctions, using a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Perform regular inspections of all systems to assess their operational status, ensure optimal performance, and identify any potential issues in a timely manner.
  • Manage the scheduling and efficiency of watering procedures, taking into account local weather conditions, landscape requirements, and water conservation practices.
  • Train and guide custodial/groundskeepers on irrigation procedures, including system operation, basic maintenance, and safety protocols.
  • Comply with all local regulations and environmental guidelines when performing irrigation work, including managing water runoff and recycling.
  • Maintain records of system blueprints, equipment operation manuals, maintenance logs, and irrigation schedules.
  • Coordinate with landscaping team to understand specific watering needs for different types of vegetation and adjust irrigation practices accordingly.
  • Conduct regular assessments of soil moisture levels to ensure proper hydration and minimize water waste.
  • Monitor the inventory of irrigation supplies and equipment, and order new materials as needed.
  • Stay up-to-date with new developments and technologies in the field of irrigation and propose their implementation where beneficial.
  • Provide reports and updates to management on the status of irrigation systems, challenges encountered, and plans for improvements.
  • Assists with landscaping duties such as:
  • Lawn mowing
  • Trimming
  • Edging
  • Pruning
  • Weeding
  • Aerating
  • Thatching
  • Snow Removal
  • Installing and repairing underground sprinkler system
  • Mechanic for landscaping equipment
  • Assist in keeping buildings and premises, including sidewalks, roof drains, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times
  • Maintain tools and equipment and guard against breakage, loss, and theft
  • Operate all maintenance vehicles in a safe and lawful manner
  • Be responsible for monitoring fuel and water systems according to state requirements
  • Assist with the set-up and coordination of school and public use of facilities
  • Assume responsibility for his or her continuing professional growth and development through such efforts as attendance at in-services.
  • Keep immediate supervisor informed of activities and any issues that may arise represent the school district in a positive manner
  • Know and follow school district policy and chain of command
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education And/Or Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Three to five years of related experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Hold a current and valid Idaho Motor Vehicle License with an excellent driving record
  • In-depth knowledge of various irrigation systems, equipment, and related technology, including smart technology irrigation control systems.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the mechanics and maintenance of main lines, valves, pumps, and filter systems.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or in a team.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and work on uneven terrain.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel between various district properties.
  • Ability to perform long periods of standing; walking; climbing; bending; stooping; kneeling; bending and twisting at the neck and trunk; moving of furniture; pushing/pulling items such as tables, bleachers, and scrubbing machines; frequent lifting of objects weighing up to fifty pounds and occasionally move objects weighing up to ninety pounds; and climbing ladders

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to read, analyze and interpret governmental regulations and legal documents. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from employees and/or the general public.

Problem Solving Skills

Demonstrate sound judgment by taking appropriate actions regarding questionable findings or concerns.

PRODUCTIVITY/EFFICIENCY SKILLS: Consistently demonstrate ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs, such as reprioritizing work as necessary; organize job functions and work area to be able to effectively complete varied assignments within established time frame.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to conduct basic math functions.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral and diagram form. Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Other Skills And Abilities

Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications in word processing (Microsoft Office) and spreadsheets (Excel).

SALARY : According to the Landscaping Salary Schedule

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT : 256 day calendar assignment.
