The Business Data Analyst II is a mid-level role for someone who has moved past the basics and is ready to own analytical workstreams from start to finish. You know how to write a real query, build a report a business user can actually act on, and manage a stakeholder conversation without hand-holding. What this role asks of you is independence — plus the judgment to prioritize, the communication skills to influence, and the discipline to document your work so others can build on it.
You'll be embedded in NFI's Data and Analytics team, partnering with data engineers and modelers as we build out a modern platform on Microsoft Fabric. You don't need to know our systems on day one — you need to be the kind of analyst who gets up to speed quickly, asks good questions, and earns stakeholder trust through consistent, reliable delivery.
In your first year, success looks like: owning at least one reporting domain end-to-end, contributing meaningfully to data model and documentation standards, and becoming the analyst that a business team reaches out to directly when they have a question.
Analytics & Reporting
Own end-to-end delivery of analytical workstreams: requirements gathering, data extraction, validation, visualization, and stakeholder presentation.
Design and build Power BI reports and dashboards, including data modeling, DAX measures, and performance optimization.
Write complex SQL queries across multiple source systems (including T-SQL, and potentially DB2 or other platforms) to support reporting and ad-hoc analysis.
Translate ambiguous business questions into well-scoped analytical deliverables with minimal supervision.
Data Quality & Governance
Lead data validation efforts for new data sources and reporting domains, establishing repeatable QA processes.
Create and maintain data documentation: business rules, data dictionaries, lineage, and BI logic at a standard others can build on.
Identify data quality issues proactively and work with engineering to resolve them at the source.
Collaboration & Influence
Facilitate requirements sessions with business and technical SMEs, synthesizing competing priorities into clear analytical specs.
Serve as a go-to analytical resource for one or more business lines, building trusted relationships with stakeholders.
Mentor and support Business Data Analyst I team members, providing guidance on SQL, documentation, and analytical approach.
Contribute to team standards and best practices for reporting, documentation, and data analysis.
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, or a related field.
2–5 years of relevant experience in business analysis, data analytics, or reporting with demonstrated ownership of deliverables.
Strong, confident SQL - complex joins, aggregations, subqueries, CTEs across real production databases.
Track record of producing business rules, data dictionaries, or process documentation others rely on.
Comfortable presenting analysis and recommendations to business leaders; can manage stakeholder expectations independently.
Preferred:
Hands-on experience building or contributing to dashboards using visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) and Excel.
Familiarity with data warehousing or cloud platforms (e.g., Snowflake, AWS, Azure).
Familiarity with Python or PySpark and how it’s used for data transformation, automation, or analysis — especially in a cloud or notebook environment.
Familiarity with star schema design, dimensional modeling, or EDW concepts.
Experience with transportation, warehousing, supply chain, or operations data (WMS, TMS, or similar).
