Position Summary
Madison Middle School is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Braille Specialist Paraprofessional to support students who are blind or visually impaired. This position plays a critical role in ensuring access to instructional materials by transcribing, adapting, and producing braille materials and tactile learning resources. The paraprofessional will work closely with the Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) and classroom teachers to support student access to the curriculum in both academic and functional settings.
Primary Responsibilities

Transcribe print instructional materials into Braille

Prepare and reproduce braille textbooks, worksheets, assessments, and classroom materials in a timely manner

Create tactile graphics and adapted learning materials to support student comprehension

Maintain and operate braille production equipment and software (e.g., braille embossers, translation software, tactile graphic tools)

Collaborate with the Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to ensure accuracy and alignment of materials with instructional goals

Assist in organizing and maintaining a system for braille and adapted material distribution

Support students in accessing braille materials in classroom and school environments as directed

Ensure confidentiality and security of all student instructional materials and records

Assist with inventory and tracking of braille equipment and supplies

Participate in training related to braille codes, assistive technology, and visual impairment supports

Support inclusion opportunities by preparing accessible materials for general education settings

Ensure student safely navigates all environments

Communicate effectively with teachers and service providers regarding student needs and material timelines
Minimum Qualifications
-
Paraprofessional
-
Demonstrated proficiency or willingness to become proficient in Unified English Braille (UEB)

Strong attention to detail and accuracy in transcription work

Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple assignments

Basic computer skills and ability to learn specialized braille software

Strong organizational and communication skills

Ability to maintain confidentiality and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired

Completion of braille transcription coursework or certification (preferred or willingness to obtain)

Familiarity with assistive technology used in visual impairment services

Experience in a school-based special education setting

Knowledge of tactile graphics production
Work Environment & Expectations
This position requires strong attention to detail, consistency, and time management. The Braille Specialist Paraprofessional must be able to work independently while coordinating closely with instructional staff to ensure students receive timely access to all instructional materials in accessible formats.
