Janitor (Part-time, 14 hours/week)

At the Mount Prospect Public Library, we offer more than just a job. SCHEDULE: Each position averages 14 hours per week and follows a repeating 2 week schedule. Since the hours below reflect the needs of the library, we are unable to offer flexibility outside of these specific schedules. During the interview process, applicants will be asked to indicate their schedule preferences.

Position #1
  • Week 1: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday 5am to 9am & Sunday 7am to 11am
  • Week 2: Monday, Wednesday, & Friday 5am to 9am
Position #2
  • Week 1: Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday 5am to 9am & Sunday 7am to 11am
  • Week 2: Monday, Thursday, & Friday 5am to 9am
Position #3
  • Week 1: Monday, Tuesday, & Friday 5am to 9am
  • Week 2: Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday 5am to 9am & Sunday 7am to 11am
Position #4

  • Week 2: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday 5am to 9am & Sunday 7am to 11am

SALARY: $17 per hour

PURPOSE

Under the direct supervision of the Facilities & Security Manager, this position is responsible for the general cleaning and upkeep of the library building and property. Overall, this position requires the ability to perform light to medium work while maintaining the safety and appearance of the facilities.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

This position comprises the following essential duties:
  • Cleaning and Sanitation (approx. 80%)
  • Trash/Recycling Collection and Removal (approx. 20%)
Other non-essential job duties may include furniture placement or removal.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Cleaning and Sanitation

  • Cleans and maintains all hard surface floors and stairs.
  • Clean, sanitize, and maintain furniture, including service desks, workstations, public tables, and seating.
  • Cleans and sanitizes all washroom facilities.
  • Cleans windows and other glass surfaces.
  • Dusting furniture, fixtures, and shelving or book stacks.
  • Vacuums and cleans carpeting

Trash/Recycling Collection and Removal

  • Collects and removes trash from various locations on the premises, including offices, workstations, and common areas.
  • Collects recyclable materials and ensures disposal in accordance with established procedures.
  • Maintains and cleans trash bins, recycling containers, and other equipment used in the removal process.
  • May remove and dispose of other library material, as needed or directed

Other

  • Activates and deactivates the building security system when scheduled.
  • Assists with inventory control of cleaning supplies.
  • Prepares for the daily opening of the library, including unlocking staff and public entrances.
  • Assists with shifting furniture/equipment.
  • Assists with the meeting room set-up, as assigned.
  • Assists with the removal of snow and ice to provide safe access for the public and staff, as needed.
  • Attends appropriate meetings, workshops, and seminars.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma (or equivalent work experience) required. Some previous commercial janitorial experience desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & WORK CONDITIONS:

Knowledge & Ability

  • Ability to access, input and retrieve data from the computer
  • Knowledge of interactive web applications and email
  • Knowledge of Library policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of supplies and equipment associated with commercial cleaning
  • Knowledge in the operation of janitorial and mechanical equipment
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a typical library environment
  • Work is performed while:
    • occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs.,
