SUMMARY:
The Fellowship in Addiction Medicine is a one-year program designed to create champions of evidence-based care for patients with substance use disorders (SUDs). During their time with the program, fellows will learn the skills needed to provide addiction treatment within the context of primary care. They will also develop skills needed to act as peer advocates to promote best practices for diagnosis and treatment in primary care medical practices as well as support to health care providers and ancillary personnel to allow them to practice evidence based care with confidence. The fellow will participate in a clinical and didactic curriculum focused on treatment of addiction, and will maintain a primary care patient panel.
DESCRIPTION:
- Participate in the Addiction Medicine fellowship rotations at partner sites as assigned, including rotations on relevant inpatient services at affiliated hospitals, at methadone maintenance programs, needle exchange programs, and other sites providing services to patients and families.
- Participate in the Addiction Medicine didactics curriculum as scheduled.
- Provide addiction treatment to patients during one session each week as assigned at an IFH health center.
Pr Provide Addiction Medicine Hotline coverage as assigned to assist colleagues in the care of patients with addiction.
Provide primary care to a panel of patients, including patients with addiction, for four sessions per week at a primary practice site.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of ACGME-accredited Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Obstetrics Residency
Program.
Board-certified or eligible in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Obstetrics
Have or be eligible to receive an unrestricted New York State Medical License
- Have or be eligible to receive a DEA License

Contract dated 10/1/2025 between THE INSTITUTE FOR FAMILY HEALTH, (hereinafter “the Institute”) and Martha Renn, MD (hereinafter the “Fellow”) agrees to serve as a fellow in the Addiction Medicine Fellowship program at the Institute beginning 01/12/2026 until 01/11/2028.
1. The parties hereto agree as follows:
Training Program: Institute for Family Health Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program and Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program (ECRIP)
Annual Stipend: $100,000.00

3. The Fellow also agrees to accept the following responsibilities:
a) under the supervision of attending providers, assume responsibilities for the safe, effective and compassionate care of patients, consistent with the Fellow’s level of education and experience, including participation in clinical and other rotations at partner organizations.
b) participate fully in the educational and scholarly activities of the training program.
c) develop and participate in personal program of self-study and professional growth with guidance from the teaching staff.
d) participate in institutional programs, committees, councils, and activities involving the medical staff as assigned by the Fellowship Program Director, and adhere to the established policies, procedures, and practices of the Sponsoring Institution and its affiliated institutions.
e) participate in the evaluation of the program and its faculty.
f) develop an understanding of ethical, socioeconomic, and medical legal issues that affect the practice of medicine.
g) apply appropriate cost containment measures in the provision of medical care.
h) keep charts, records and reports up to date and signed at all times.
i) adhere to ACGME Institutional and Program Requirements.
j) meet standards of professional behavior expected of a Fellow.
k) for the clinical research portion of the fellowship, the Fellow agrees to:
o develop a comprehensive study protocol outlining the objectives, methodology, procedures, and analysis plan for the proposed research project;
o ensure compliance with applicable institutional, federal, and ethical requirements for the conduct of human subjects research;
o prepare and deliver presentations on the study and its findings at internal and external professional conferences; and
o develop and submit a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal to support the dissemination of study findings.
4. During the term of this agreement the Fellow shall receive:
a) Annual stipend will be $100,000.00, paid on a bi-weekly pay schedule in accordance with the Institute’s pay practices.
b) The Institute shall provide to the Fellow and/or family with health insurance, including hospitalization, major medical, counseling and support, prescription, and life insurance coverage at subsidized cost, per Institute policies.
c) New York State Disability payment is provided for extended disability. Family and medical leave, including pregnancy-related maternal leave, may be granted for a fixed period under appropriate circumstances and proper document, in accordance with Institute policies. Uncompensated personal leave may be granted by the Fellowship Program Director for a fixed period under special circumstances. While education leave time may be granted, payment of expenses for attending conferences, if any, will be decided by the Fellowship Program Director.
d) The Institute shall provide professional liability coverage for all activities performed by the Fellow on behalf of the Institute or its related companies and programs through the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA). This coverage is limited to those activities that are official clinical activities of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship program.
e) Vacation time of 20 days, which may be taken at any time during the period of appointment subject to the approval of the Program Director. Vacation time must be arranged with the Program Director before the program creates its yearly schedule.
5. The Fellow represents that, prior to the commencement of the Fellowship hereof he/she will:
a) have satisfactorily completed all requirements of the ACGME-accredited residency program in which he/she is enrolled for the preceding academic year, and he/she shall have sent to his/her Program Director a letter of recommendation from his/her present Program Director;
b) provide the Institute and partner organizations hosting rotations with all credentialing information which these organizations require him/her to provide, including but not limited to medical school diploma and transcript, and, where applicable, currently valid New York State license or limited permit to practice medicine, ECFMG certificate, or Fifth Pathway certificate.
c) have sustained no disciplinary action, nor have any pending disciplinary action in connection with any medical training program or have any malpractice action commenced against him/her except as disclosed in writing to the Institute.
6. The Fellow agrees as follows:
a) that, during the period of his/her appointment as a Fellow at the Institute, he/she will notify his/her Fellowship Program Director of, and obtain prior written approval for, any employment or other professional activities outside the Institute that the Fellow proposes to engage in, such notification to include at a minimum a written description of the nature and hours of all such proposed outside employment or other professional activities, and will comply with the institutional and departmental moonlighting policies. The Fellow is not required to engage in moonlighting, and must gain written permission to moonlight from his/her Fellowship Program Director. The Fellow’s performance will be monitored to determine the effects of moonlighting activities. Adverse effects on performance of duties as a Fellow may result in the withdrawal of permission to moonlight.
b) that, even if prior written approval has been obtained from his/her Fellowship Program Director for employment or other professional activities outside the Institute, he/she will under no circumstances engage in any employment or other professional activities outside the Institute when he/she (i) is scheduled to work an average of eighty hours per week over a four-week period at the Institute.
c) that, he/she has the sole responsibility of guaranteeing compliance with the institutional policies and procedures governing resident duty hours worked, in compliance with New York State Hospital Code, Part 405; and with the ACGME Common Program Requirements Part VI;
d) that, he/she will adhere to his/her delineation of privileges and any other guidelines, regulations or restrictions governing his/her professional activities at the Institute, and that he/she will perform only those specific treatments and procedures that he/she has been authorized in writing by his/her Fellowship Program Director to perform.
e) that he/she will maintain current licensure, certifications, trainings and other requirements for maintenance of clinical privileges.
f) that, he/she agrees to cooperate fully, upon request, with any quality assurance, risk management or peer review investigations, assigned research and teaching, or any other investigation undertaken by the Institute, including those concerning his/her peers.
7. With respect to foreign nationals or foreign medical graduates, it is understood that this Agreement may be terminated by the Institute in the event the Fellow does not have appropriate visas, work permits, or other credentials to enable the Fellow legally to carry out his/her duties and responsibilities under this Agreement.
8. Coverage of service in the interest of patient care must and will be given priority over any and all commitments.
9. The parties have entered into this Agreement in good faith and acknowledge their respective ethical and legal obligations to fulfill this Agreement until its expiration date. This Agreement may be terminated and other disciplinary action may be imposed in accordance with the policies and procedures concerning Disciplinary actions, hearings, and appeals of the Institute and its graduate medical education programs.
10. The Institute shall follow relevant policies related to grievances, including grievance policies specific to graduate medical education programs and organizational policies related to sexual and other harassment, discrimination.
11. This contract may be terminated by the Institute if the Fellow has not completed satisfactorily by the effective date of this Agreement any and all prerequisites to this house staff year as stated in paragraphs 5 a) – e) of this contract.
12. This contract is not effective until executed in writing by both the Fellow and an official of the Institute.
13. The Fellow shall at all times comply with all applicable federal state, and local laws, rules, and regulations. In addition, the Fellow shall at all times comply with the policies and procedures of the institution in which such individual is providing services.
14. The parties agree that the Agreement will be governed by the laws of the State of New York without regard to conflicts of law and that they will submit to the jurisdiction of the state and/or federal courts located within the State of New York for the resolution of any dispute that may arise hereunder.
15. This Agreement is the complete understanding between the parties and may not be changed orally.
