Core Competencies (Must-Have)Manual Testing

• Ability to design critical-path, edge-case, and negative test scenarios without handholding.

(If they only test what the UI shows, they’re useless.)

• Experience testing APIs, web applications, and user flows across devices.
• Knows how to break a feature logically—not randomly—using boundary value analysis and equivalence partitioning.
• Comfortable writing:
• Test cases
• Test plans
• Bug reports with clear reproduction steps that developers can’t misinterpret

Automation

• Basic but solid scripting with Java + Selenium automation.
• Not someone who only records scripts—must understand the framework.
• Can write stable selectors, not brittle XPaths that break easily.
• Understands how to structure tests for maintainability, not spaghetti code.

Technical Understanding

You don’t need an engineer who can build the product, but you do need one who understands it:

• Familiar with REST APIs, status codes, headers, and payload validation.
• Basic understanding of databases (enough to verify data states).
• Knows how CI pipelines run tests and how to debug failures.
• Understands the difference between:
• Functional testing
• Regression testing
• Smoke testing
• Sanity testing

Mindset Requirements

This is where most juniors fail:

• Curious and naturally skeptical — assumes nothing works unless proven.
• Communicates clearly and objectively.
• Doesn’t wait for instructions; identifies gaps and asks the right questions.
• Takes responsibility for preventing bugs, not just finding them.

Expected Outcomes

A good junior QA with 2 years of experience should:

• Reduce the number of bugs reaching staging or production.
• Write automation that improves coverage, not bloats the test suite.
• Document test scenarios without being spoon-fed.
• Make developers’ lives easier with precise, reproducible bug reports.
