Job Overview
We are seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Reading Teacher / Tutor to help K-12 students strengthen their reading, writing, and language skills. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in English Language Arts instruction and a passion for helping students develop confidence, comprehension, and fluency. This position may include support for elementary through high school students, as well as SAT/ACT Reading and Writing preparation.
The role involves delivering individualized and small-group instruction, developing personalized learning plans, and fostering a supportive, engaging learning environment that promotes literacy growth and academic success.
Responsibilities
- Provide one-on-one or small group instruction in reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and literacy comprehension across grade levels.
- Support students in building foundational skills such as phonics, decoding, fluency, and reading comprehension, as well as higher-level critical reading and analytical writing.
- Assist students in SAT/ACT Reading and Writing test preparation, focusing on comprehension, grammar, and essay strategies.
- Develop and follow personalized lesson plans aligned with Sylvan curriculum and student goals.
- Use Sylvan’s proven technology and instructional tools to deliver engaging, interactive lessons.
- Continuously assess student progress, adapt instruction as needed, and provide constructive feedback.
- Create a positive and encouraging learning atmosphere that builds confidence and motivates students.
- Use praise and Sylvan token systems to recognize achievements and promote engagement according to Sylvan instructional management standards.
- Record student progress, tokens, and session details accurately in Sylvan systems.
- Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and Center staff regarding student performance and growth areas.
- Ensure smooth transitions at the beginning and end of instructional sessions and support all student safety and well-being procedures.
- Attend regular staff meetings and participate in ongoing professional development.
- Complete certification training for all Sylvan programs taught.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Education, English, Reading, or a related field.
- Teaching or tutoring experience with children or adolescents; classroom experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of reading instruction methods, literacy development, and English Language Arts curriculum.
- Familiarity with educational technology tools and online learning platforms.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain concepts clearly and engage diverse learners.
- Experience supporting students with different learning needs is a plus.
- Ability to create engaging, student-centered lessons tailored to various learning styles.
- Strong organizational and classroom management skills.
- Basic computer proficiency for lesson delivery and record-keeping.
