Knitting & Crochet Pattern Designers (Experienced Only) – Baby, Wearables, Home Décor & Blog Content

Job Overview

We are a growing yarn craft brand seeking experienced knitting and crochet pattern designers to join our extended design network on a long-term basis.

We develop patterns for both product use and blog content, with a focus on baby items, wearables (scarves, hats, garments), home décor, and other practical, giftable projects designed for the US market.

This role requires strong pattern writing ability, not just the ability to knit or crochet.

What You’ll Be Designing

  • Baby items (blankets, garments, accessories, giftable projects)
  • Wearables (scarves, hats, and simple garments)
  • Home décor (dishcloths, blankets, pillows, bags, etc.)
  • Blog-friendly patterns designed for beginner and confident beginner makers

Required Qualifications (Non-Negotiable)

  • Proven experience writing complete knitting and/or crochet patterns
  • Portfolio that includes:
  • Photos of finished projects
  • Full pattern documents
  • Ability to write patterns using US terminology and conventions, aligned with Craft Yarn Council standards
  • Strong attention to detail (stitch counts, clarity, structure)
  • Ability to follow briefs and deliver polished, usable patterns

What We Mean by “Complete Patterns”

A complete pattern is one that is ready to be used by other makers, either as a free or paid pattern in the marketplace.

This typically includes:

  • Clear materials list (yarn, yardage, tools)
  • Gauge information (when applicable)
  • Standard abbreviations and notes
  • Step-by-step written instructions (not just charts or shorthand)
  • Stitch counts and sizing details where relevant
  • Clean formatting suitable for publication (PDF or web)

Preferred Experience

  • Experience designing baby items, wearables, or home décor
  • Experience writing patterns for beginner audiences
  • Experience publishing patterns on platforms, blogs, or marketplaces

What We Need From You

Please include the following in your application:

  • Links or files showing at least 2 complete patterns you have written
  • A short summary of your experience as a pattern designer (not just maker)
  • Your typical turnaround time
  • Please share how you typically price your pattern work (e.g., based on project type, complexity, or usage). If possible, include example ranges or past project types you’ve worked on.

Compensation

Flexible and based on experience.
The listed pay is a placeholder — final compensation will be based on scope and your pricing structure.

What to Expect From Us

  • Ongoing freelance work (not a one-time project)
  • Yarn support for approved designs
  • Tech editing support
  • Clear briefs and structured collaboration
  • Non-exclusive agreements

Final Note

We are looking for designers who already create publish-ready patterns used by other makers.
If you are just starting out in pattern writing, this role may not be the right fit at this time.

Pay: $10.00 - $20.00 per hour

Work Location: Remote
