Korey Wise Innocence Project - Legislation Inside, Paralegal/Legal Assistant

Legislation Inside Program Support:

• Organize and facilitate weekly virtual meetings with CDOC staff.
• Manage regular communications with CDOC staff, CDOC administration, and incarcerated representatives.
• Meet regularly with individual members in prison.
• Organize a cohort of other support groups. Update these support groups on important policy decisions, invite them to Legislative Inside meetings, and learn about their policy efforts.
• Research possible policy strategies and ideas.
• Engage state representatives and state senators.
• Draft policy ideas and work towards their passage in the state legislature.
• Organize and run elections in CDOC facilities and maintain an accurate list of current incarcerated representatives who are participating.
• Supervise a work-study law student.

Manage KWIP’s Student Group:

• Provide support to the leaders of the KWIP law student group.
• Assist students in identifying and organizing guest speakers and organizing other social justice activities.
• Work with CU Boulder Undergraduate School to engage with the KWIP Law student group.

Paralegal & Legal Support:

• Assist KWIP’s attorneys in identifying and reviewing potential wrongful conviction cases.
• Work with law students to organize and maintain case files.
• Obtain and review discovery materials, including police reports, trial transcripts, and forensic evidence.
• Coordinate with expert witnesses and legal professionals to support ongoing case investigations.
• Maintain communication with clients and their families regarding case developments.

Coordinate KWIP’s Educational Outreach Efforts:

• Conduct speaking engagements at various community organizations.
• Seek out speaking engagements.
• Prepare educational outreach materials and curriculum.

This position has the ability to work in a hybrid work format and has an expected work schedule of Monday – Friday during regular business hours, though the position may need to meet outside of regular work hours at times.

• A paralegal certificate obtained through either an American Bar Association (ABA)-approved paralegal studies program or an accredited institution.
• Substitutions: Two (2) years of work experience in a paralegal capacity, which included conducting legal research, preparing drafts of legal documents, and gathering and compiling data from legal references and resources, will substitute for the required certificate.
• A driver’s license, insurance, and ability to travel to prisons around the state of Colorado.

• Compassionate & Professional – ability to approach sensitive legal cases with empathy, integrity, and discretion.
• Resourceful & Proactive—able to work independently, problem-solve, and take initiative in a fast-paced legal setting. Strong proficiency in legal databases, case management software, and the Microsoft Office Suite.

• Associate's or Bachelor’s degree.
• Minimum 2 years of experience in case management, legal research, or paralegal work.
• Experience with Legislation Inside program, preferably as a member.
• Experience in criminal defense, post-conviction law, or innocence work.
• Lived experience in the criminal legal system.
• Familiarity with wrongful conviction cases, forensic evidence, and discovery review.
• Spanish language proficiency.
