Position Description

Advertised Job Summary
The College of Pharmacy is seeking to hire a Lab Manager for the Cancer Genetics Lab in the Department of Drug Discovery and Biomedical Sciences.

The Lab Manager oversees interdisciplinary research across multiple departments at USC and across the world with partnering institutions. Directs and manages all critical lab functions for the Cancer Genetics Lab. Oversees and maintains organoid core activities, high throughput drug testing pipelines, advanced DNA sequencing and informatic pipelines, manages day-to-day operations of the laboratory, supervises designated lab employees, performs a variety of complex laboratory procedures, collects and analyzes data for journal publications, orders laboratory supplies, and equipment, and maintains laboratory regulatory compliance documentation (lab safety, IRB research protocols), responsible for lentiviral vector generation and use. Develops advanced molecular genetic testing procedures and methodology for new molecular lab assays, based on the needs for current research projects. Ensures and documents laboratory compliance and training for certification. Demonstrates commitment to conducting business lawfully and ethically by consistently adhering to compliance policies, procedures, and regulations. This position is established in support of expanded research activities.

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience
Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 3 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a related field and 8 years of related research experience.
  • Experience with DNA/RNA and protein isolation, PCR, and electrophoresis.
  • Experience with laboratory automation, multiplex arrays, microscopy, Python coding, and next-gen sequencing platforms.

Ability to demonstrate commitment to conducting business lawfully and ethically by consistently adhering to compliance policies, procedures and regulations.

Supervises all employees working in the Cancer Genetics Lab. Tailors the supervision and assigned workload to meet the specific skills/needs of a variety of lab employees (undergraduate students, master’s level students, Ph.D. students, postdocs, medical students, and temporary employees). Ensures laboratory compliance and training for USC. Tracks training and skills development for each employee. Maintains equipment and supplies for the lab. Ensures adequate supplies and reagents are available as needed. Performs equipment and instrument calibration and maintenance as required.

Oversees and maintains organoid core activities for molecular genetic studies. Performs and teaches other individuals proper organoid culture and analytical techniques. Performs complex lab procedures, such as DNA and RNA isolation, real-time PCR, protein extraction, DNA / RNA sequencing, western blotting, cell culture, histology, enzyme activity assays, and cell-based experiments. Develops customized lab tests/procedures for exploratory research designed to target/measure new molecular targets or pathways. Updates and maintains written protocols for all lab procedures.
