Lab Technician

Carpenter Co has an immediate opening for Lab Technician on 1st shift in the Quality department at our Riverside, CA manufacturing plant. This position is responsible for performing various physical properties testing as specified by a set of quality standards and company/customer requirements. Cuts test samples and uses laboratory equipment to perform various physical properties tests, accurately records the data and completes reports as specified by a set of quality standards to company and customer requirements. Work is performed in a production and in laboratory environment This position works in a normal production/maintenance environment with exposure to temperature changes and loud noise.

Carpenter Co. employees are committed to working hard to ensure production goals are met while maintaining operations excellence. As the successful candidate, you will be expected to communicate with Plant Management, Department Managers and Supervisors as to the status of product quality.

Your additional responsibilities as a Lab Technician will include:

Accurately measure test blocks of prime foam and carpet cushion for height, width and length.

Operate computerized saws and band saws for sample preparation.

Accurately weigh top skin, side skin, bottom skin, trim weight.

Test foam for: Density, Indentation Force Deflection, Air Permeability, Resiliency, Compression Sets, Tear, Tensile, and Elongation as per Company and Customer specifications.

Record any visual defects such as splits, buck shot, veins, etc.

Coordinate odor panel tests as required.

Operate precision lab testing equipment such as various scales, United Testing machines, high pressure auto clave, various flammability chambers, ovens, static meter, micrometers, rulers, porosity machine, die cutting machine and titrator when needed.

Perform flammability testing on foam and/or fiber.

Accurately enter all test data into the Carpenter SAS system.

Print all test data and distribute to Division Manager, Pouring or Carpet Cushion Manager and Quality Manager.

Release foam for shipment in the SAP system when necessary.

Maintain all Quality records.

Read and interpret a tape measure.

May be required to perform monthly department safety inspections.

Skills and Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED
Some previous machine operation experience is required to perform the job
On the job training is provided
Basic computer knowledge
Must be able to read and interpret a tape measure
Must have good measurement and math skills
Basic computer experience using Microsoft Excel and Word
Must be able to operate band saw, slitter and various laboratory equipment
Must be able to multi-task and determine acceptability with minimum of supervision
Ability to work flexible hours and overtime
