Laboratory Assistant

The Laboratory Assistant maneuvers in a cross functional role between the gross room and the pathology office. This position is responsible for, but not limited to the upkeep and operation of gross room equipment, solution rotation/replacement and specimen verification. Additionally, within the Pathology office, this position is expected to collect and prepare specimens for review, as well as order entry and management.

  • Responsible for correctly accessioning and ordering testing per protocol.
  • Keeps an inventory of Grossing room and place orders to maintain adequate stock of needed items.
  • Receives and orders, fills phone requests for reports, slides or blocks for outside studies, consults and legal cases of Pathology material.
  • Responsible for distributing completed reports to designated personnel.
  • Requests and posts surgery schedule and frozen sections for following day.
  • Enters Pathologist on call into directory in LIS system.
  • Follows established procedures for histology quality control and reports discrepancies to the manager.
  • Troubleshoots equipment, reagents, or procedural technique when problems occur. Notifies the supervisor if unable to solve the problem.
  • Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures. When handling blood and/or bodily fluids, universal precaution procedures will be followed to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals.
  • Performs all responsibilities/duties required by the laboratory as defined in the scope of service to ensure that appropriate testing for all clients served is correctly and accurately performed.

Minimum Education


  • Associates Degree Required or
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent Required and
  • Three years of related experience maybe considered in lieu of degree Required


Minimum Work Experience


  • 0-1 year Previous laboratory or health care experience. Required
