Laboratory Assistant

Job description:

We are seeking a highly disciplined, detail-driven Laboratory Assistant to support evening laboratory operations. This role is best suited for individuals who are naturally precise, self-directed, and consistent in their work.

This is a full-time overnight shift position, with an approximate start time of 9:00PM. Exact scheduling will be finalized based on workflow needs. All initial training will be completed on the day shift.

This position requires a high level of independence. Work is performed with minimal supervision, and accuracy is expected at all times.

Core Responsibilities

• Load and unload automated immunohistochemistry (IHC) instruments according to written procedures
• Load and unload slide scanning instruments with consistent accuracy
• Accession specimens with complete accuracy
• Perform cytology preparation duties, including cell block preparation using a centrifuge
• Embed uncomplicated samples, including cell blocks, following established protocols
• Follow all SOPs precisely and consistently
• Maintain a clean, organized, and inspection-ready work environment

Training Expectations

• Complete structured training and competency assessments during day shift hours
• Demonstrate sustained accuracy and consistency before advancing to additional responsibilities
• Train to serve as a backup biopsy grosser once competency is demonstrated

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy in prior work
• Ability to work independently for extended periods without supervision
• Proven ability to follow written protocols consistently
• Strong reliability and personal accountability
• Ability to maintain focus during repetitive, high-precision technical tasks

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in a science-related field (required for biopsy grossing responsibilities)
• Prior laboratory, histology, cytology, or medical experience

Compensation

Pay is commensurate with experience and willl include a shift differenctial.

This role is not structured as a fast-paced, constantly supervised environment. It requires individuals who:

• Work carefully and methodically
• Maintain consistency across repetitive tasks
• Take ownership of their work without needing frequent direction

Small errors in this setting can have significant downstream impact. Candidates who prefer highly social environments, frequent task changes, or ongoing oversight are unlikely to find this role a good fit.
