Position Summary

The Laboratory Assistant II supports daily laboratory operations by performing specimen receiving and processing, patient registration, order entry, and specimen preparation (centrifugation, labeling, aliquoting, storage, and transport). This role also supports pathology specimen handling, equipment maintenance, customer service, and overall laboratory workflow while ensuring compliance with Orlando Health policies and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive, process, label, aliquot, store, and transport laboratory specimens
  • Perform patient registration, order entry, billing, scheduling, and downtime procedures
  • Prepare specimens using centrifugation and proper handling techniques
  • Process pathology specimens and assist with reference testing
  • Maintain laboratory supplies and manage customer supply orders
  • Utilize laboratory and hospital information systems
  • Deliver high‑quality customer service and respond proactively to requests
  • Assist with cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment (centrifuges, refrigerators, etc.)
  • Document specimen quality issues accurately
  • Participate in laboratory Quality Improvement initiatives
  • Train new or existing staff as needed
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
  • Follow infection control practices, accreditation standards, and Orlando Health policies
  • Perform clerical tasks including filing, charting, report distribution, and requisition management
  • Assist with scheduling Pathologists, Histotechnicians, or Transport Representatives as needed
  • Assist with bone marrow collection and processing
  • Perform phlebotomy if competency is approved and on file

Education & Experience Requirements

Required:
  • High School Diploma or GED
Experience (one of the following):
  • Two (2) years of laboratory experience or patient care experience
  • OR current enrollment in a science‑related program (Nursing, Medical Technology, Pre‑Med, or related clinical program) may substitute up to two years of experience
Preferred:
  • Phlebotomy experience

Licensure / Certification

  • None required

  • Knowledge of specimen collection, handling, and processing

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced laboratory environment
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Comfort using laboratory and hospital information systems
  • Ability to work flexible hours to meet operational needs
  • Reliable attendance and teamwork focus
