The Laboratory Assistant II plays a vital role in supporting daily laboratory operations. This position is responsible for specimen receiving and processing, patient registration, order entry, specimen preparation, and transport to testing sites, while ensuring accuracy, quality, and exceptional customer service. The role also supports pathology functions, equipment maintenance, and overall laboratory workflow in compliance with Orlando Health policies and regulatory standards.

Receive, process, label, aliquot, store, and transport laboratory specimens

Perform patient registration, order entry, billing, scheduling, and downtime procedures

Prepare specimens using centrifugation and appropriate handling techniques

Process pathology specimens and support reference testing

Maintain laboratory supplies and assist with customer supply orders

Operate and navigate laboratory and hospital information systems

Provide high‑quality customer service and respond proactively to needs

Assist with laboratory equipment cleaning and maintenance (e.g., centrifuges, refrigerators)

Document specimen quality issues accurately

Support laboratory Quality Improvement initiatives

Train new or existing staff as needed

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment

Follow all Orlando Health policies, procedures, infection control, and accreditation standards

Maintain reliable and punctual attendance

Perform additional clerical duties including filing, charting, report distribution, and requisition management

Assist with scheduling Pathologists, Histotechnicians, or Transport Representatives as needed

May assist with bone marrow collection and perform phlebotomy if competency is approved and on file
Required:
-
High School Diploma or GED
Experience (one of the following):
-
Two (2) years of laboratory experience or patient care experience
-
OR current enrollment in a science‑related program (e.g., Nursing, Medical Technology, Pre‑Med, or related clinical field) may substitute up to two years of experience
Preferred:

Knowledge of specimen collection, handling, and processing

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment

Effective communication and customer service skills

Comfort using laboratory and hospital information systems

Ability to work flexible hours to meet operational needs
