JOB PURPOSE

As a Lab Officer at the Research Institute of Science and Engineering (RISE), you will play a key role in supporting research activities within the Advanced Materials Research Lab. The position focuses on the operation, maintenance, and utilization of a newly installed Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) for a wide range of advanced materials characterization applications. You will be expected to support multidisciplinary research projects across the university, working closely with faculty members, researchers, and students. Responsibilities include supervising, maintaining, and upgrading laboratory facilities; providing technical support and training to lab users; and ensuring the safe operation and proper functioning of laboratory facilities, materials, and equipment in compliance with safety standards.


MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES & EXPECTATIONS

  • Operate and maintain Transmission Electron Microscopes (TEM) and associated sample preparation systems.
  • Ensure optimal instrument performance through regular calibration, alignment, and preventive maintenance.
  • Follow up on orders for equipment and consumables.
  • Assist researchers in experiment planning, sample preparation, and data interpretation.
  • Develop and optimize new TEM techniques and analytical methods as needed.
Liaise with Directorate of Central Lab for instrument maintenance and upgrades.

REQUIRED SKILLS
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to prepare professional documents, in both Arabic and English.
  • Excellent working knowledge of personal computer applications with an emphasis on MS Office applications such as Excel, Word, and Teams.
  • Familiarity with data analysis software (e.g.Thermi Fisher Velox, ImageJ)
  • Good experience using relevant laboratory equipment, testing, troubleshooting, calibration and operation techniques.
  • Good project and time management skills.

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
  • Educational background in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or other related fields.
  • Knowledge of electron-optical principles, imaging modes, and analytical techniques
  • Experience in sample preparation for TEM analysis (e.g., FIB, ion milling, ultramicrotomy).
  • At least 2 years’ hands-on experience operating Transmission Electron Microscopes
A Master’s degree in a relevant field will be considered an added advantage for this position.
