Laboratory Technician II
The incumbent will work as part of a team conducting research on tuberculosis. Responsibilities will include performing molecular, immunologic, and microbiologic assays on blood and tissues specimens from humans and animals experimentally infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The incumbent will follow established protocols, troubleshoot protocols as necessary, and collect and analyze data. Much of the work will be conducted at either BioSafety Level-2 or at BioSafety Level-3 in the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory, requiring a DOJ background check. The incumbent will assist senior researchers in developing research proposals and papers and maintain organized records. Experience with infectious disease research or immunologic techniques is a plus. Bachelor level degree is required with preference given to those with degrees in biology, immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or chemistry. One year experience in an immunology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related laboratory. A pre-employment TB test is utilized to pre-emptively prevent the spread of tuberculosis to medical and healthcare professionals as well as patients.
Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.
A Research Lab Technician position is available in the lab of Dr. Patricia Grace in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics. This lab uses human in vitro and mouse in vivo models to study tuberculosis. The incumbent will perform laboratory analyses including isolation of immune cells from blood and tissues, immunologic assays such as FACS, ELISPOT, and ELISA, plating bacterial cultures, and performing PCR tests. Equipment used will include microscopes, centrifuges, incubators, ELISPOT reader, and real-time PCR machines. The work will be done in a team environment with close coordination between all team members. The data generated will be entered into an electronic laboratory notebook and shared with the Principal Investigators and other collaborators (both intra- and extramural) who will rely on it to make important scientific decisions. Experienced laboratory technicians will train and directly supervise the incumbent. The studies and the data generated, while not confidential, are certainly sensitive and privileged information.
This position does not involve extended periods of walking or standing nor is heavy lifting required. The incumbent must be able to work in a Biosafety Level 3 Laboratory, including the ability to wear the requisite personal protective equipment. Must be able to use a computer keyboard and mouse, to see and hear clearly to maintain a safe working environment, and to critically analyze and synthesize information.
