Lactation Consultant

Clinical activities

  • Provide expert assessment, support, treatment and evaluation of breastfeeding women in an appropriate setting.

  • Remain current with best practice initiatives in breast feeding and BHFI identifying trends and issues at the unit level.

    • Maintain and advance own clinical competence and professional development.

    • Support the development, provision and evaluation of breast feeding and BFHI educational programs for health professionals.

    • Liaise with professional reports and leadership to identify organizational and individual learning needs for lactation and BFHI.

    • Develop and maintain key partnerships crucial to the success of the role including other Lactation consultants, community BFHI leaders and the DOH.

    • Computer literate.


  • International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)

  • Registered Midwife or Nurse with relevant licensure

  • Experience with Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative standards

  • Breast feeding clinical experience

  • BLS certification

  • Certificate in Adult Teaching preferably

  • Professional knowledge of the breastfeeding process, antepartum intrapartum and postpartum health care and psychosocial issues

  • Knowledge of the breastfeeding care and educational principles, practices, procedures, and techniques needed to assist breastfeeding families

Knowledgeable and skilled in the physiology and clinical management of breastfeeding
