Job Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under general supervision of the Survey Manager, operates conventional electronic and manual surveying equipment utilized in gathering survey data pertaining to distances, angles, elevations and contours used in the preparation of boundary surveys, topographic surveys, as-built surveys, maps and exhibits of Airport property.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Uses manual and electronic surveying equipment to collect and record raw survey field data in accordance with written standards or as directed by the Survey Manager.
  • Operates and maintains total stations, theodolites, EDMs, data collectors, levels and other survey equipment.
  • Reviews and verifies the accuracy of raw survey information.
  • Performs mathematical calculations to determine distances, angles, elevation, grades, arcs and curves; makes sketches and drawings, records field observations and provides other documentation to support surveys.
  • Collects, compiles and reduces raw survey field data.
  • Compares relevant as-built data to construction plans and surveys.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of land survey experience including construction layout and boundary reconstruction.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above.
  • Possession of a valid class C driver’s license.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the principles and accepted practices of professional land surveying.
  • Knowledge of survey terminology and chaining procedures.
  • Knowledge of conventional survey instruments (total stations, theodolites, electronic data monitors (EDMs), data collectors, levels, prism poles and level rods).
  • Ability to perform mathematical computations using algebra, geometry and trigonometry and to compile raw survey data.
  • Ability to read construction plans and surveys and to make calculations using architectural/engineering scales.
  • Ability to perform and close horizontal and vertical control traverses within acceptable tolerances.
  • Ability to work within the guidelines established for working within the Airport Operations Area (AOA).
  • Ability to prepare sketches and record data in an organized, legible format.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective internal and external working relationships.
  • Ability to pass a medical physical examination.

DESIRABLE

  • Experience with Global Positioning System data collection.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

  • Must obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Airport Identification/Access Badge (badge) in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements in Chapter 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 1500 et al., and DFW Airport’s Airport Security Program within thirty (30) days from date of employment and maintain qualification for a SIDA badge upon each badge renewal.
  • This is a designated safety sensitive position as defined in DFW Airport’s Drug and Alcohol Administrative Policy and Procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass a drug test prior to employment and to submit to drug screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the safety sensitive position.

  • Uses substantial reasoning in problem solving.
  • Performs manual labor, frequently exerting forces equivalent to lifting up to 50 pounds, and occasionally exerting forces equivalent to lifting up to 100 pounds.
  • Exchanges information by telephone, in writing and in person.
  • Drives to locations on and off Airport property.
