Landfill Heavy Equipment Operator

Position Summary

Operate and maintain very large, very heavy, motorized equipment used in the more complex and difficult work of landfill operations. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, D9 dozers, 623 scrapers, 836 compactors, 140 motor graders, large loaders and excavators, 8000 gal water wagons, tarping machines, etc. Operators are expected to maneuver safely and efficiently on steep slopes and in tight areas with significant truck traffic. Equipment is used to compact trash as well as move large quantities of earth to excavate and construct cells, build roads and achieve final grades. During the course of work, operator may need to perform minor repairs or preventive maintenance for heavy equipment

This position involves working in a hazardous work environment and is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Essential and Supplemental Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed
below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable
accommodation.


  • Proficiently operate all heavy equipment used in trash compacting and earth moving operations, including, but not limited to, D9 dozers, 623 scrapers, 826/836 compactors, 140 motor graders, large loaders and excavators, water wagons, etc. and other equipment to support a variety of operations at the landfill facility.
  • Read and interpret elevation stakes and verify slope.
  • Excavate and construct new cells and participate in other earth moving projects which may include rill repair, slope closure, and maintenance of drainage structures.
  • Build, level and excavate roads and land surfaces using graders and other construction equipment.
  • Bulldoze hill sides; collect and haul debris, tires, mulch, glass, sand and gravel.
  • Operate smaller earth moving equipment; back-hoe, front-end loader, dump trucks, etc. to perform tasks.
  • Operate water wagon and similar equipment for dust control and dirt compaction.
  • Operate plow and salt truck for snow and ice removal, may act as a primary snow team member operating snow blowers and snowplows with brooms and or blades.
  • Operate hydro seeder or equivalent to apply alternate daily cover, control erosion or apply seed.
  • Operate tarping machine for use as alternate daily cover.
  • Operate heavy equipment to move, repair, modify or install portable litter and/or perimeter fencing.
  • Use hand-held mobile radio units to coordinate tasks and resources.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records.
  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices and standard operating procedures; maintain effective communications with supervisors and co-workers.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education directly related to the minimum requirements below may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED; and

Two (2) years of heavy equipment operation and heavy construction experience; and

To include one year of combined experience operating any of the following equipment (or equivalent):

  • D9 Dozer
  • 623 Scraper
  • 140 Motorgrader
  • 826/836 Compactor

One year (1) experience operating heavy equipment at an active landfill preferred.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a valid City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Working Conditions

Environmental:
Hazardous work environment; construction site, inclement weather conditions, exposure to dust, noise, truck traffic, hazardous materials, and all types of waste.

Physical:
Essential and supplemental functions requires maintaining mental condition necessary to operate heavy equipment on steep slopes and in tight, high traffic areas. Maintain physical condition necessary for heavy lifting and climbing; operating motorized equipment and vehicles; work in confined spaces; work at heights; work around heavy construction equipment.
