The Landfill Heavy Equipment Specialist is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, minor repairs, and major repairs on a variety of heavy machinery and equipment, such as compactors, loaders, excavators, bulldozers, and trucks, with minimal supervision. This role also involves diagnosing major repairs. The ideal candidate will have solid experience in heavy equipment maintenance, be able to troubleshoot issues, and ensure machinery operates efficiently and safely.
This is a "mandatory-testing" position that requires Drug Testing.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Independently perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance tasks, including changing fluids, changing filters, greasing moving parts, and inspecting tires, tracks, and mechanical components.
Complete scheduled maintenance according to county and manufacturer guidelines, ensuring equipment is in optimal working condition and ready for use.
Perform minor repairs and adjustments to heavy machinery, such as replacing worn parts, fixing leaks, adjusting mechanical components, and addressing other minor mechanical failures.
Ensure all minor repairs are completed efficiently and in compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
Welding Proficiency
Perform major repairs, including engine overhauls, transmission repairs, hydraulic system repairs, and other complex issues, under the supervision of the maintenance manager.
Help identify the root causes of major equipment failures, providing insight and support to complete the repairs correctly and safely.
Use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify mechanical, hydraulic, emissions, and electrical issues in heavy equipment.
Perform troubleshooting to assess the extent of problems and make recommendations for repairs or replacements as necessary.
Experienced in MIG, TIG, arc, and oxy-acetylene welding for both mild and hardened steel.
Performs structural repairs to dozer blades, compactor teeth, loader buckets, and frames.
Capable of fabricating custom components, including guards, handrails, push blades, and wear liners.
Reads and interprets fabrication drawings and safely performs field welding under landfill conditions.
Follow established safety guidelines and county policies while performing maintenance tasks.
Ensure that all work is performed in compliance with environmental, health, and safety standards, reporting any safety concerns or hazards.
Maintain clean and organized work areas, ensuring all tools and equipment are in proper working order.
Keep accurate and up-to-date maintenance logs, recording inspections, repairs, parts used, and any issues discovered during maintenance activities.
Help manage and track equipment service schedules to ensure compliance with routine maintenance requirements utilizing appropriate software and management systems.
Work collaboratively with the maintenance team, providing support and sharing knowledge with entry-level maintainers.
Assist in the training and development of less experienced staff, helping to build skills and improve overall team performance.
Suggest improvements in maintenance processes, tools, and equipment usage to enhance efficiency and reduce downtime.
Stay informed about new technologies, tools, and techniques in heavy equipment maintenance, incorporating them into work practices when applicable.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Training and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.), and up to two years of specialized or technical training beyond high school and five years of experience in a fleet maintenance position working with diesel, and/or heavy equipment repair which provided knowledge of electrical systems, AC systems, and hydraulics; or, a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements. OEM factory training (Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, Volvo, etc.) highly desirable
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL A/B) Preferred
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics (KSAO's):

using applicable tools and equipment of the trade
estimating the cost of repairs and related materials

During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, hearing, seeing, finger and hand dexterity as well as repetitive motions
Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noises and travel.
