Position Summary

We’re seeking a creative, ecologically-minded Landscape Concept Designer to help shape the early vision of our California native landscape installations. This part-time role is ideal for someone who blends artistic imagination with ecological intelligence and enjoys both remote creative work and hands-on site exploration.

Using a combination of digital tools (such as online site surveys, aerial imagery, and mapping software) and in-person site visits, you’ll assess residential properties and develop conceptual design maps and narratives that reflect the ecological and aesthetic potential of each space. You should have a strong working knowledge of California native plants, habitat restoration, sustainable hardscaping, and the ability to respond imaginatively to complex terrain.

While you’ll work independently in the early stages of design, all final decisions on design direction, materials, and installation methods are made in collaboration with the CEO, who offers strong creative leadership and a deeply rooted ecological design vision.

When design work is light, the ideal candidate is also willing to support the company in other creative ways—especially by helping with content development that reflects our mission and strengthens our brand presence.

Key ResponsibilitiesSite Assessment & Concept Design

  • Perform site assessments using both digital tools and in-person visits to gather spatial, ecological, and aesthetic information.
  • Develop compelling conceptual design maps, sketches, and written narratives that express regenerative, buildable, and inspiring landscape possibilities.
  • Apply strong understanding of California native ecosystems, pollinator habitats, and sustainable water-wise design.
  • Imagine feasible hardscape elements (e.g., paths, patios, water features) that work with natural grades, soil types, and environmental conditions.
  • Present preliminary concepts to the CEO for feedback, refinement, and alignment with company design philosophy.
  • Use of Slack, Gmail, clickup, and other software.
  • Impecable communication

Design Iteration & Project Collaboration

  • Revise concepts based on CEO guidance, client input, and field observations.
  • Remain flexible and responsive to iterative design changes throughout the pre-installation phase.
  • Communicate proactively about opportunities, challenges, and observations related to the site or design direction.
  • Prepare visuals or notes that support clear communication with clients and build crews.

Qualifications

  • Based in or near Berkeley, CA, with the ability to travel to local job sites (Berkeley, Oakland, surrounding areas).

  • Solid knowledge of California native plants, habitat-focused design, and sustainable landscaping practices.
  • Strong visual communication skills—whether hand sketching, CAD, Illustrator, or other mapping/rendering tools. We use Procreate and Sketchup
  • Ability to work independently from home with reliable internet.
  • Comfortable with collaborative feedback and adaptable to changing project needs.
  • Team player with excellent communication skills.
