Summary:
The Groundskeeper is responsible for maintaining the appearance, cleanliness, and meticulous landscaping of the Royal Gorge Route Railroad’s guest-facing facilities, including local rental properties and the historic Royal Gorge Mansion grounds, which will soon feature a new upscale restaurant. This role ensures that all outdoor spaces reflect the high-quality guest experience expected at one of Colorado’s premier scenic rail, dining and lodging destinations. The ideal candidate takes pride in creating beautiful, safe, and welcoming outdoor environments for the thousands of guests who visit the railroad each year.


Essential Functions

  • Maintain the grounds, landscaping, and outdoor appearance of all designated Royal Gorge Route Railroad properties.
  • Perform routine lawn care, including but not limited to mowing, trimming, edging, aerating, and fertilizing.
  • Maintain landscaping at the Royal Gorge Mansion property, including gardens, walkways, patios, and surrounding outdoor spaces.
  • Plant, prune, and maintain trees, shrubs, flowers, and seasonal plantings.
  • Ensure guest-facing areas remain clean, safe, and visually appealing at all times.
  • Maintain irrigation systems and monitor watering schedules.
  • Remove weeds, debris, litter, and snow from pathways and guest areas.
  • Assist with seasonal property maintenance (fall cleanup, spring landscaping preparation and winter storm cleanup)
  • Support preparation of outdoor areas for events, weddings, and special functions at the mansion or railroad facilities.
  • Safely operate and maintain landscaping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, and small utility vehicles.
  • Identify and report maintenance issues affecting grounds or guest areas in an organized, urgent manner.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.


Education/Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, horticulture, property maintenance, or similar outdoor work preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required. Heavy equipment operation certifications preferred.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Previous experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, horticulture, property maintenance, or similar outdoor work preferred.
  • Experience maintaining commercial properties, hospitality venues, parks, or public spaces is a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of plant care, irrigation systems, and seasonal landscaping practices required.
  • Ability to safely operate landscaping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, and small utility vehicles.


Working Conditions/Essential Job Functions

  • Strong attention to detail and pride in maintaining attractive outdoor spaces.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks including bending, lifting, walking, and standing for extended periods.
  • Reliable, self-motivated, and dependable: must be punctual and take pride in a job well done.
