Landscaper - Crew Lead

JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective:

The Landscaper is responsible for maintaining outdoor grounds and landscaped areas to support safe, functional, and well-kept properties. This role includes plant care, irrigation work, operation of landscaping equipment, and completion of general landscape maintenance tasks. The position also requires the ability to organize work, support or direct team members as needed, and carry out duties efficiently and in accordance with safety standards.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Strong knowledge of landscaping, irrigation, and piping systems.
  • Perform landscape installation, maintenance, and improvement tasks for residential and/or commercial properties.
  • Genuine passion for plants, landscaping, and outdoor work.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to think ahead and solve problems in the field.
  • Operate equipment such as skid steer and excavator as needed for landscape and site work.
  • Safely use a chainsaw for trimming, cutting, and removal work.
  • Install, repair, and troubleshoot piping and irrigation systems.
  • Plan and organize daily job tasks to ensure work is completed efficiently and to a high standard.
  • Ability to lead, direct, and coordinate others on landscaping and maintenance tasks.
  • Direct and support crew members in completing landscaping and maintenance assignments.
  • Monitor job progress and adjust workflow or priorities as needed.
  • Maintain plant health through proper planting, pruning, watering, fertilizing, and general care.
  • Identify landscape issues and recommend practical solutions.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely and in accordance with company standards.
  • Completes all tasks assigned by supervisor.
  • Basic duties include digging, raking, mowing, trimming, edging, watering, weeding; moving sod, soil and mulch; planting flowers, hedges and trees; tree pruning, landscape and/or turf and sod installation, blowing and sweeping, changing trash bags, collecting litter, power-washing surfaces, etc.
  • Receives direct and specific direction from immediate supervisor as to work assignments and quantity and quality of work expectations.
  • Maintain good working relationships with clients and co-workers.
  • Follow a to-do list and procedures as well as be proactive to create lists for property care and improvement.
  • Maintain landscape and garden areas as needed by planting, trimming, fertilizing, mowing, or other activities.
  • Installs, maintains, feeds, prunes, trims, and waters a variety of plants, flowers, trees, and shrubs in order to maintain a beautiful environment.
  • Manually removes, installs, and maintains plant material in beds and containers.
  • Relocates specimen trees and shrubs as directed.
  • Designs or assists in design of landscaping beds, and grounds.
  • Cleans fountains and ponds as needed. Ensure that all fountain pumps are operational or repaired as necessary.
  • Keeps gardens and green spaces clear of debris.
  • Operates machinery for loading, unloading, and transporting materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Installs and maintains the sprinkler and irrigation systems that keep lawns, gardens, and various green spaces watered. Maintain water timers to prevent water waste. Document and map with a detailed diagram of where water irrigation systems are installed to pinpoint for repairs or future digging projects to prevent damage.
  • Monitors irrigation lines so they can find a problem faster and keeps a record of how the irrigation system performs.
  • Maintains aesthetic quality and adequate clearances around driveways, paths, lighting, roadways, midways, signage, safety equipment, and other items.
  • Works safely with a variety of power trimming, mowing, and tilling equipment, such as mowers, edgers, string trimmers, tractors, tillers, etc. as required by job assignment.
  • Ability to operate different kinds of heavy machinery such as mowers, tractors, and trenchers effectively and safely. Be able to do maintenance and minor repairs to all landscaping machinery.
  • Able to repair, install, and operate equipment that can include sprinklers, water lines, pumps, suction devices, valves, and other plumbing equipment.
  • Inspects premises to identify infestation source and extent of damage to property, wall, and roof porosity, and access to infested locations at property.
  • Exterminates unwanted invasive creatures with the use of different techniques that are harmful to the pest.
  • Sets different pest control methods like creating barriers to prevent pests from entering a building, setting mechanical traps, and placing poisonous paste or bait in sewers, burrows, and ditches. Monitor all extermination efforts consistently.
  • Ensures a building free from pests by maintaining the structural integrity of the building and ensuring the health and safety of occupants.
  • Determines the type of treatment needed to eliminate invasive pests and clean and remove blockages from infested areas to facilitate spraying procedure and provide drainage. Cleans work site after completion of extermination job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Completes all tasks assigned by supervisor.

Work environment

  • The work is generally performed outdoors.
  • Exposure to insects, and wildlife.
  • May be exposed to varying temperatures, inclement weather conditions, dust, fumes, and other environmental factors typical of maintenance and repair work.
  • Regularly works around tools, mechanical equipment, and cleaning chemicals, including environmentally safe products.
  • Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by task or environment.

Landscaping Physical demands

  • The work requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, crawling, hand digging, reaching, or similar activities, and lifting a minimum of 50 lbs. assisted or unassisted. Must be able to move up and down a step ladder at times working overhead.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical ability to perform demanding outdoor labor in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to bend and twist, stoop, and kneel.
  • Ability to carry 25 to 50 lbs.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions.
  • Ability to see for purposes of reading printed matter.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
  • Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand.
  • Ability to reach in all directions.
  • Ability to grasp and hold cleaning equipment for long periods of time.
  • Sufficient mobility to perform essential job functions.

Travel required

  • This position required travel to various property locations within Northern California, and to multiple property location sites as scheduled.

Required education and experience

  • Landscaping Experience: Typically requires at least 2 years of irrigation, hardscaping, planting, and pesticide experience.

Preferred education and experience

  • High School Diploma (Preferred)

Additional eligibility requirements

  • Valid California Driver’s License.
  • Have a reliable vehicle.
  • May be required to drive personal vehicle to multiple worksites during the workday. Proof of current/active automobile insurance if driving personal vehicle and assigned to multiple sites.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment Drug Screen.

  • Must have a cell phone for communication and scheduling.
  • Must be able to read landscaping supply labels, and documents.
  • Can Safely Operate a skid steer, excavator, and chainsaw.
