Lead Criminal Assistant State's Attorney

JOB SUMMARY:

The Lead Criminal Assistant States Attorney – Felony Division for McHenry County is a mid to high-level Assistant State’s Attorney. This attorney will perform responsible functions in Felony litigation as the 1st chair.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Performing research and writing
• Preparing for trial by notifying and interviewing victims and witnesses
• Preparing written motions, briefs, orders, and other legal documents
• Negotiating and entering plea agreements by reviewing charges, police reports, and criminal records
• Preparing orders of supervision, conditional discharge, or probation
• Conducting adversarial hearings, bench trials, and/or jury trials
• Lead on prosecuting felony criminal cases, pre-trial prep and duties.
• Interacting with staff, county officials, law enforcement officers, victims and the general public in person or by telephone in order to respond to inquiries, receive complaints, and resolve problems.
• Performing other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Experience:

• 5+ years’ experience in the legal field; criminal prosecution experience preferred

Education:

• Juris Doctor

Licenses and Certifications:

• Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Illinois

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

• Illinois Criminal Code and Criminal Procedure
• Trial advocacy
• Excellent oral and written communication skills

Skill in:

• Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing
• Arguing persuasively before a judge and/or jury
• Assimilating facts and drawing sound conclusions
• Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines
• Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines and following up assignments with minimum direction
• Preparing well-reasoned and well-researched motions and briefs
• Accurately proofreading copy with accompanying knowledge of grammar, punctuation and spelling
• Performing data entry using word processing, spreadsheet or database commands and formats material as required

Pay: $115,000.00 - $124,000.00 per year
