Lead Designer/Art Director

Job Overview
We are seeking a talented and innovative Art Director / Graphic Designer to join a Rhode Island-based book publishing company. This role requires a highly skilled individual capable of leading visual projects from concept to completion, ensuring engaging solutions specifically designed for print. The ideal candidate will possess expertise in book design, covers, and illustration, with a keen eye for detail and a passion for visual storytelling. This position offers an exciting opportunity to shape the visual identity of our books.

You must reside in the state of Rhode Island.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute compelling visual concepts
• Lead art direction for book covers and layouts, ensuring high-quality production design and visual consistency.
• Produce illustrations and photo manipulations with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and other graphic design tools like Sketch or CorelDRAW.
• Manage color schemes and typography to ensure effective visual communication.
• Provide input on photography; handle photo editing and color management for consistent output.
• Stay current with industry trends in book design, in particular high-quality/luxury art books.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; master's preferred.
• Proven experience in art direction and graphic design.
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), After Effects, Sketch, CorelDRAW, Figma, and InVision.
• Strong skills in layout design, typography, color theory, and visual storytelling.
• Excellent presentation skills with the ability to communicate creative ideas effectively.
• Strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in digital art, illustration, and layouts.
• Must have a passion for books.
• Must demonstrate skills as an artist; this is not a suitable position for someone solely accustomed to commercial work.

Job Type: Contract

Pay: $30.00 - $50.00 per hour

Expected hours: 5 – 10 per week
