SUMMARY: Under minimal supervision, the Lead Stress Engineer leads a team of engineers on programs/projects to support substantiation and certification with regards to the mechanical evaluation during all phases of product development. Provides guidance and helps develop less experienced engineering staff, provides technical coordination/expertise between the Engineering team and the customer, and interacts with vendors and internal organizations. This position also includes development of proposals and assists with planning and hiring.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:- Primary internal point of contact for the stress group to provide guidance to overall design and stress engineers, along with manpower requirements for current and future programs.
- Primary point of contact for technical stress issues between customer representatives, external vendors, Program Management, Design, Certification/Regulatory Bodies, and Procurement.
- Plans, reviews, organizes, and prioritizes engineering assignments to ensure task completion.
- Develops, checks, and approves substantiation reports (i.e. interiors, structures, damage tolerance evaluations, Weight and Balance\C.G. and\or Static Test Plans\Reports) in the ATS standard format and reviews and approves subject reports required to support the aircraft reconfiguration.
- Develops substantiation reports that meet the technical, schedule, and cost objectives for the program.
- Researches aircraft configurations, technical specifications, and/or Statements of Work to ensure proper interface between aircraft structure, systems, and interior products.
- Performs technical review of supplier documentation to support aircraft reconfiguration and overall system requirements before the subject documents have been reviewed by the subject DER. Provides comments to the applicable DER with regards to findings on the subject documents.
- Participates in the development of Request for Quotation (RFQ) required to complete the reconfiguration program by providing scope, hours, and parts for the applicable RFQs.
- Develops and checks FEA models for complex component designs for structure, systems, and interiors.
- Reviews and approves LOPAs and General Arrangement drawings for accuracy.
- Participates in ITCM, PDR, and CDR meetings with Customer.
- Participates in Design Reviews and Design Build Team meetings as stress focal.
- Interfaces with purchasing, vendors, and customers leading to successful correction of issues.
- Advises Management and/or Program Management on risk issues and action items.
- Coordinates and assists in implementing new processes and procedures within the Engineering department to help improve efficiency.
- Adheres to the processes and procedures of ATS and ATS Engineering and notifies Engineering Management when these procedures are not followed.
- Leads/mentors a group of stress engineers and provides technical guidance to lesser experienced staff.
- Coaches others on best design practices.
- Establishes collaborative relationships to achieve objectives.
OTHER DUTIES:- Assists Project Engineer and Engineering Management with additional tasks when business needs arise.
- Position may require overnight travel, being on-call, and responding to technical AOG situations during off hours.
- May require onsite support at different MRO’s and locations other than ATS.
- May be assigned to alternative shifts such as day, night, swing, and weekends to support programs or installations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:- Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Engineering or related field, with a minimum of eight (8) or more years of relevant aerospace experience preferred; or twelve (12) years of equivalent aircraft design experience required.
- OEM airframe, system, and interior design practices experience preferred.
- Aircraft interior and/or VIP retrofit experience preferred.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND DEXTERITY:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to sit, stand and walk; use their hands and arms; and talk or hear; and focus on objects close up. The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Compensation
The full base pay range for this position is $97k - $144k annually, not including bonuses or benefits. Your pay will be based on your experience, skills, and education, as well as internal equity to ensure fairness across the team. Candidates closer to the lower end of the range are typically building their expertise, while those at the higher end bring significant experience and specialized knowledge. This position is also eligible for an annual performance bonus.
