Job Summary

The Learning & Data Technology Specialist, jointly housed within the Graduate School and the Office of Academic Success departments, is responsible for designing and implementing emerging technologies that enhance academic support, integrate institutional data systems, and strengthen student success across both divisions at UT Tyler. The position oversees the development of bridge applications, learning-analytics tools, and an AI-driven, closed-system Virtual Teaching Assistant that provides secure, course-specific support. Through strategic leadership in instructional technology, AI integration, and academic informatics, the position advances innovative, data-informed solutions that enhance the effectiveness of academic success at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Specialist divides their time between the Graduate School and the Office of Academic Success, reporting to the Academic Success Coordinator for the undergraduate unit and the Director of Graduate Program Support for the graduate unit.

Key Responsibilities

  • AI System Development & Virtual Teaching Assistant
    • Coordinate the implementation, expansion, and maintenance of the AI driven, closed-system Virtual Teaching Assistant (VTA) from pilot phase through deployment in undergraduate and graduate courses.
    • Configure, monitor, and refine AI models to ensure accuracy, relevance, and alignment with academic standards.
    • Develop and maintain protocols for model updates, error handling, quality assurance, and documentation.
  • Digital Infrastructure & Data Integration
    • Build and maintain digital infrastructure that links academic data systems with emerging technologies, bridge applications, and adaptive learning tools.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders in the Office of Institutional Analysis, Office of Information Technology, and external university partners to coordinate data flows and integrate campus data systems into unified dashboards and analytic tools to create a user-friendly and streamlined interface.
  • Learning Analytics & Evaluation
    • Provide data-informed insights to Academic Success leadership, faculty, and program partners.
    • Assess academic-success technology needs for undergraduate and graduate populations and identify areas where emerging technologies can enhance service delivery.
    • Facilitate effective use of academic data to support student-success initiatives.
  • Additional Responsibilities
    • Provide technical assistance to undergraduate and graduate academic-success units.
    • Maintain detailed records on the use, performance, and outcomes of emerging technologies used in academic support.
    • Manage and maintain in-house technology initiatives designed to support tutoring, supplemental instruction, and other academic-successservices.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, or a closely related discipline.
  • One (1) year of experience engaged with emerging technologies, educational technology, academic information systems, or integration platforms in a higher-education or comparably complex environment.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.


Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience implementing or administering AI-enabled tools and experience building or maintaining metrics pipelines for academic systems.
  • Proven experience integrating data across LMS, advising, analytics, and SIS systems.

  • Exceptional organizational skills, with strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate documentation and work flow records.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, exercising sound judgment, initiative, and professional responsibility in both autonomous and collaborative settings.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code Section 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
