Objective:
RCSI Bahrain is seeking to appoint a dynamic and clinically focused Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Clinical Microbiology to support the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education within the School of Medicine.
Given the clinically integrated nature of the curriculum, the University is specifically seeking a medically qualified clinician with expertise in Infectious Diseases and/or Clinical (Medical) Microbiology. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering clinically relevant microbiology teaching aligned to modern medical practice, patient safety, antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention, and clinical decision-making.
The appointee will contribute to teaching, assessment, curriculum development, academic advising, and scholarly activity, while supporting the continued integration of microbiology across systems-based and case-based learning. The appointee will collaborate closely with the Department of Clinical Microbiology in RCSI Dublin, including participation in teaching and assessment meetings to ensure a coordinated and standardised approach to teaching and assessment across both campuses.
Appointment may be made at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level depending on qualifications, experience, academic profile, and leadership contribution.

Key Responsibilities:
Teaching:
• Deliver high-quality teaching in microbiology, infectious diseases, infection prevention, and antimicrobial stewardship across undergraduate programmes.
• Contribute to integrated and clinically contextualised teaching within systems-based and case-based curricula.
• Facilitate small-group teaching, tutorials, laboratory interpretation sessions, clinical correlation sessions, and team-based learning activities.
• Support the development and delivery of clinically relevant microbiology practical and simulation activities.
• Contribute to online and blended learning initiatives using the University’s digital learning platforms.
• Participate in student assessment activities including question writing, OSCEs, practical examinations, standard setting, and moderation processes.
• Participate in teaching and assessment meeting with the Dept of Clinical Microbiology, RCSI, Dublin
• Provide academic mentorship and pastoral support to students.
• Work collaboratively with clinical and basic science colleagues to ensure relevance and consistency of teaching delivery.
• Contribute to curriculum planning, vertical integration, sequencing, and alignment of microbiology and infectious diseases teaching across the undergraduate programme.
• Work collaboratively across disciplines including medicine, pathology, pharmacology, immunology, paediatrics, and public health to support integrated curriculum delivery.
• Support clinically relevant microbiology practical teaching, simulation activities aligned to clinical practice.
Research and Scholarship
• Contribute to scholarly activity, educational innovation, research, and/or clinical academic initiatives relevant to microbiology or infectious diseases.
• Support student research, audits, quality improvement initiatives, and scholarly dissemination.
• Develop collaborative links with clinical partners and healthcare institutions within Bahrain and wider region.
Student Mentoring:
• Provide pastoral care, mentorship, and support in developing research projects to students
• Participate in the Personal Tutor Program to support student well-being and academic development.
General:
• Participate in School and University committees, working groups, and academic governance activities.
• Support quality assurance, accreditation, and regulatory activities as required.
• Contribute to outreach, student recruitment, and community engagement initiatives.
• Undertake additional duties appropriate to the grade of appointment.
• Attend administrative and academic meetings relevant to clinical teaching.
• Provide regular feedback to the Head of Department on program content and curriculum development and assist in implementing improvements where appropriate
• Ensure that all RCSI Bahrain policies and procedures are adhered to
• Participate in faculty development and medical education training activities as required.
• Familiarises oneself with the RCSI Bahrain Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
Requirements
Personal Specifications:
• Medical degree recognised for clinical practice.
• Specialist qualification and/or board certification and/or FRCPath or equivalent in:
o Infectious Diseases, and/or
o Medical Microbiology, and/or
o Clinical Microbiology.
• Eligibility for professional registration/licensure in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
• Experience delivering clinical microbiology / infectious diseases teaching.
• Experience in assessment design, moderation, and standard setting.
• Experience with case-based or blended learning approaches.
• Postgraduate qualification in medical education or ongoing faculty development activity is desirable.
• Ability to deliver high-quality teaching and educational activities within required timelines.
