POSITION SUMMARY: The Legal Assistant I will review cases for legal action, prepare documents for attorney review, and assist in preparing the docket for court.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform word processing of child support pleadings, correspondence, and other complex legal document.
  • File child support pleadings with the Comanche Nation Tribal Court; the Cheyanne & Arapaho Court; the Kiowa Court; the Court of Indian Offenses; and the State of Oklahoma courts all across Oklahoma.
  • Set court dates and notifies parties of upcoming court dates.
  • Monitor child support cases.
  • Assist attorney and child support staff in preparing cases for court.
  • Update and maintains docket book for the Comanche Nation Tribal Court; the Cheyanne & Arapaho Court; the Kiowa Court; the Court of Indian Offenses; and the State of Oklahoma courts all across Oklahoma.
  • Attend court proceedings/hearings to assist attorney.
  • Research court records to obtain order/documents pertaining to child support cases.
  • Update and maintains hearing screens on database.
  • Enter, retrieve and update child support case information on database.
  • Perform money handling duties to process child support payments.
  • Respond to moderately complex telephone inquiries concerning child support cases.
  • Draft and edit pleadings, correspondence, briefs and other legal documents.
  • Perform money handling duties to process child support payments.

REPORTS TO: Legal Assistant and/or the Director of the Comanche Nation Child Support Program.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Majority of work will be in an office setting
  • Must be able to lift or carry supplies weighing no more than 20lbs
  • Able to maintain sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The working environment is fast paced.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of two years from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, social work or have legal secretarial training;
  • May substitute full time child support program experience.
  • Complex clerical, secretarial or closely related experience for required education.
  • Skill needed in working under pressure and meeting deadlines.
  • Confidentiality is high priority.
  • Must be familiar with power point, Excel, Access and Microsoft Word.
  • Must work well with the public, possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a background check and drug screening.
