Position and Salary
The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Legal Assistant 1 in the Corrections Division. This position is located in Olympia, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).
Legal Assistant 1 (Range 42) salary range: $45,024 - $60,132 annually
The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

About the Corrections Division
The Corrections Division is looking for a professional who thrives in a fast-paced, collegial environment to join our team.
The Corrections Division consists of legal assistants, paralegals and attorneys who are located in the Olympia and Spokane Offices. The Corrections Division advises and defends the Department of Corrections and its employees in civil rights actions, Public Records Act cases, and personal restraint petitions relating to prison conditions, sentencing, and community custody issues, and the division also responds to all federal habeas corpus petitions filed by individuals in state custody who challenge their convictions and sentences. These cases critically impact the state’s corrections system and range from straightforward pro se civil rights matters to complex class action litigation challenging the constitutionality of prison conditions and programs. The litigation teams handle cases before all state superior and appellate courts, as well as federal district courts and courts of appeal. The division also advises the Governor’s Office on extradition and detainer matters, and provides support to it’s Clemency and Pardons Board. The professional staff and AAGs in the Corrections Division are a collaborative and collegial team, and work closely with client agency staff.

Duties and Essential Functions of a Legal Assistant 1
This position supports the office’s mission in providing legal support functions and services by assisting attorneys and professional staff in the Corrections Division. Some of the duties include:
Required Qualifications
Option 1: High School diploma or equivalent and two years of clerical experience including a minimum of one year of experience in a legal environment;
Option 2: Two years of legal office experience;
Option 3: A combination of three years of college education and/or relevant experience;
Option 4: A two year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal studies or related field of study.
Skills & Abilities
Keyboarding proficiency at 40 wpm – ability to perform basic word processing using prescribed software.
