Ashtabula County Children Services is currently accepting applications for full-time Legal Assistant position. Applicants must have good driving record and pass a drug screen.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the general supervision of the Finance Director, serves as the Agency legal secretary and performs a variety of clerical duties.
- Prepares / types legal documents, correspondence, subpoenas and all other required documentation for filing with Court. Prepares, copies, and scans court documents and distributes (e-mail, fax, and/or mail) to necessary parties or individuals.
- Sets up and maintains legal calendar. Tracks all court deadlines and notifies caseworker(s) and supervisors of upcoming deadlines. Sets up court hearings with appropriate clerk of courts. Notifies caseworker and/or supervisor (or attorneys, foster parents, and relatives, as directed) of all pending hearings. Enters all necessary information into SACWIS.
- Sets up and maintains legal case files, updating face sheets, and filing regularly. Keeps tracking system of all children in custody regarding hearings and statutory time limits. Maintains a logging system for all children in custody entering all court actions.
- Performs clerical tasks of a precise, technical nature (e.g., compile and prepare Agency reports; copy/scan and file required documents; prepare case notes for filing and file the same; etc.). May check accuracy of state documents prepared by social work staff and collate same for invoicing purposes, Agency records and public information.
- Answers telephone and routes calls and/or provides information / answer questions as appropriate.
- ·Assist with routine clerical tasks as needed, which may include but is not limited to setting up records, typing reports and/or routine correspondence, proof typing and making corrections as needed; filing documents, preparing letters for mailing
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED, with legal training and/or related work experience which evidences a thorough knowledge of Agency operations, modern office practices and procedures and computer operation; or any equivalent combination of knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Paralegal certificate / degree and Notary Public preferred.
- Matrix Prosecutor experience preferred
- Be able to work effectively in a team environment

- Possess competent computer skills
- Be able to meet deadlines
