Delaware's Attorney General, the State's chief law enforcement officer, has a broad responsibility to combat crime, uphold civil rights, safeguard families, fight fraud, and protect consumers in the First State.
In meeting this mission, Attorney General Kathy Jennings is supported by teams of talented lawyers and staff in the Criminal, Civil, Family, Fraud and Consumer Protection, and Civil Rights and Public Trust Divisions. Deputy Attorneys General, with critical support from criminal special investigators, victim service specialists, paraprofessionals, and administrative staff, prosecute criminal cases, enforce consumer laws, provide counsel to state agencies, ensure the public's access to open government, protect the abused, and much more.
The Delaware Department of Justice is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Legal Assistant (Paralegal) to join the Violent Criminal Enterprises Unit (VCE) in New Castle County. The VCE Unit focuses on prosecuting wiretap cases, organized crime, gang-related matters, and investigations conducted through task forces and the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Initiative. The unit operates using core principles promoted by HIDTA, the Violence Reduction Network, and Intelligence-Driven Prosecution, including: (1) intelligence gathering and information sharing; (2) strategic, targeted prosecutions; and (3) strong multi-agency collaboration. Centralizing expertise in wiretap and gang cases ensures the specialized knowledge necessary for effective prosecution of these complex matters.
The Legal Assistant will provide comprehensive paralegal support to Deputy Attorneys General assigned to the Criminal Division and will work directly within the VCE Unit. Responsibilities include researching, preparing, and processing legal documents such as discovery, motions, and subpoenas; assisting Deputy Attorneys General with trial preparation, including witness contact, interview scheduling, and report collection; and coordinating with laboratories that conduct controlled substance and DNA testing to ensure timely receipt of results. The position requires the ability to work independently and efficiently in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
