Job Overview
We are seeking a reliable, detail-oriented, and professional Legal Assistant to provide essential support to our attorneys. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, excels at organization and client communication, and is passionate about helping people navigate the North Carolina criminal justice system.
Both part-time and potential full-time schedules are available, with flexibility around court calendars. Competitive pay reflects the importance of this role and rewards experience and reliability.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
The Legal Assistant/Legal Receptionist will handle a wide range of substantive and administrative tasks to ensure efficient case management and outstanding client service. Duties include (but are not limited to):
- Client Intake & Case Management
- Conduct initial client intake interviews (in-person, phone, or virtual), gather personal information, police reports, citations, and other documents; open new case files and maintain organized physical and electronic files (using case management software); track case deadlines, court dates, and discovery timelines.
- Document Preparation - Filing
Drafts, review, and proofread legal documents including correspondence, motions, affidavits, discovery requests/responses, pleadings, and client letters; prepare and e-file documents with Wake County District and Superior Courts, NC AOC systems, and other required agencies; assist with DMV-related paperwork, license reinstatement requests, and administrative hearings.
- Court & Calendar Coordination
- Maintain attorney calendars, schedule court hearings, pre-trial conferences, client meetings, and deadlines; coordinate with court clerks, prosecutors (Wake County District Attorney’s Office), law enforcement agencies, and opposing counsel; prepare attorneys and clients for hearings, trials, and sentencing.
- Client Communication and Support
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, providing timely case status updates (under attorney supervision); prepare clients for court appearances, explain procedures, and ensure they understand next steps; handle high-volume phone calls, emails, and client inquiries professionally and compassionately; Maintain effective communication with courts, vendors, and internal teams.
- *Discovery & Evidence Handling
Request *- Review, and organize discovery materials including police reports, body camera footage, 911 calls, lab results, and witness statements; assist with evidence management, redaction (when required), and trial/hearing preparation.
- Research & Investigation Support
- Conduct basic legal research and fact investigation as assigned; interview witnesses or gather background information when directed; using Westlaw, LexisNexis, and other legal research tools to support case development across multiple practice areas.
- Trial & Court Hearing Assistance
- Prepare trial notebooks, exhibits, and witness materials; attend court with attorneys as needed to take notes, organize documents, and provide real-time support.
- Administrative & Office Support
- Answer phones, manage office correspondence, process mail, and handle general administrative tasks; assist with billing, invoicing, and time-entry tracking; maintain confidentiality and comply with all ethical standards (attorney-client privilege).
- Additional Duties
- Perform other tasks as assigned to support the firm’s mission of aggressive, results-driven representation in criminal and traffic matters. Stay informed about updates in laws relevant to expunctions, securities compliance, workers' compensation procedures, and other pertinent areas.
Experience
- Previous experience as a legal assistant preferred but NOT REQUIRED to apply, paralegal preferred but not required to apply, or in a law firm or legal environment (criminal/traffic experience strongly preferred).
- Possess a willingness to learn North Carolina court procedures, e-filing systems (NC AOC), and traffic/criminal case workflows is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel), Adobe Acrobat, and case management software (e.g., MyCase, Clio, PracticePanther, or similar legal practice management database software). Training Provided.
- Strong understanding of legal procedures across diverse areas like workers' compensation protocols, personal injury claims procedures, and criminal defense including interviews and documentation review.
- Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple cases in a fast-paced setting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; bilingual (English/Spanish) is a significant plus.
- Professional demeanor, empathy for clients facing legal challenges, and a team-player attitude.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree, paralegal certificate, or higher preferred.
- Must be able to pass a background check and maintain strict confidentiality.

Pay: $35,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year
