Position Summary
We're seeking a detail-oriented, organized Legal Assistants to join our fast-paced, growing Collections Department in Southfield, Michigan. This position supports attorneys and staff in a pre judgment and post-judgment collections environment through case management, legal document preparation, court filings, client communication, and judgment enforcement activities.
The ideal candidates will have prior legal collections experience, strong organizational skills, and the ability to multitask in a deadline-driven environment. Successful candidates are initiative-takers who work well independently and collaboratively while maintaining professionalism and accuracy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, file, and mail legal documents related to pre- and post-judgment collections, including:
o Pleadings
o Complaints
o Affidavits
o Garnishments
o Subpoenas
o Writs
o Motions
o Correspondence
o Agreements
- Monitor electronic Court Register of Actions and follow up on pending filings and documentation
- Communicate professionally with courts, clients, employers, financial institutions, process servers, and other related entities regarding case status and informational needs
- Monitor and support judgment enforcement activities, including garnishments, levies, debtor examinations, payment plans, and asset investigations
- Request and review debtor employment and asset information
- Request checks for court filing fees and invoice payments
- Process incoming and outgoing mail, electronic filings, legal notices, and case updates
- Maintain accurate and current information within case management and client systems
- Answer inbound calls and place outbound calls in accordance with department protocol
- Stay current with court and judicial procedures and communicate updates to leadership
- Provide clerical and administrative support to attorneys and leadership as needed
- Provide coverage for team members to ensure uninterrupted workflow
- Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations, including FDCPA requirements and court rules
- Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or paralegal certificate preferred.
- Minimum: 2 years of Legal Assistant experience & 1–2 years of collections law or legal collections experience preferred
- Knowledge of civil litigation and collections procedures preferred
- Familiarity with court filing systems and legal terminology.
- Experience with TrueFiling/MiFILE preferred
- Experience with CLS – Collection Master software is a plus
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and legal case management software
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a high-volume workload and meet deadlines
- Ability to work accurately, meticulously, and productively in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment
- Strong attention to detail, confidentiality, and professionalism
Preferred Skills
- Experience handling garnishments, levies, and post-judgment enforcement actions
- Knowledge of skip tracing and asset investigation procedures
- Ability to prioritize and multitask effectively under pressure
- Strong problem-solving and follow-through skills
- Willingness to learn and adapt to changing priorities and procedures
Work Environment
- Fast-paced, in-person legal office environment
- Open concept department
- Frequent interaction with attorneys, court personnel, clients, and third parties.
- Primarily sedentary office work involves extensive computer and telephone use
