Legal Billing Auditor

The Legal Billing Auditor will be responsible for meticulously reviewing and auditing legal invoices from outside counsel to ensure compliance with billing guidelines, accuracy of charges, and proper documentation of legal services, with a specific focus on insurance defense matters.


Essential Job Functions
:
  • Invoice Review and Audit: Conduct detailed, line-by-line reviews of legal invoices submitted by outside counsel, verifying adherence to billing guidelines and and negotiated legal rates.

  • Discrepancy Identification: Identify and flag discrepancies, errors, and inappropriate billing practices, including block billing, vague entries, redundant tasks, excessive hours, and unauthorized expenses.
  • Work Scope and Accuracy: Assess the appropriateness and necessity of billed work against the scope of the matter and standard legal practices, particularly within auto insurance/insurance defense cases.
  • Case Work Knowledge Application: Utilize a strong working knowledge of litigation phases, case management, and insurance defense practices to evaluate the reasonableness of billed tasks and time spent.
  • Communication and Negotiation: Communicate effectively with outside counsel to resolve billing disputes, justify reductions, and ensure timely submission of corrected invoices.
  • Reporting and Analysis: Track, document, and report on billing trends, compliance issues, and savings achieved through the audit process. Assist in developing and refining internal billing guidelines.
  • System Management: Utilize and manage e-billing software and systems for efficient invoice processing, tracking, and data analysis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Experience/Qualifications
:
  • Experience in Insurance Defense: A minimum of 3 years of experience working in or directly supporting the insurance defense sector, providing an understanding of claim lifecycles, litigation strategies, legal billing and typical legal tasks.

  • Billing Audit Experience: Proven experience in legal billing review, audit, or analysis, demonstrating an ability to interpret complex legal invoices and billing rules.
  • Domain Knowledge: Strong, demonstrable working knowledge of auto insurance litigation, including common coverage issues, standard discovery practices, trial preparation, and claims handling processes.
  • Analytical Skills: Exceptional attention to detail and strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills to detect subtle billing anomalies.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for clear interaction with law firms, internal legal teams, and claims personnel.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency with e-billing platforms and Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) Degree from an accredited law school is a significant plus but not required.

  • Experience working directly for an insurance carrier or a Third-Party Administrator (TPA) in a claims or litigation management role.
  • Auditing experience with legal billing for an insurance company or law firm.

Physical Actions/Environment
: Required job duties consist of prompt and regular attendance, ability to frequently move about the office to coordinate work with others; standing, sitting and typing for extended periods; and lifting and/or carrying up to 5 lbs. Ability to frequently communicate with others in-person, on the phone/virtually, and in writing. Ability to read, understand, process and evaluate large amounts of technical information and make related, informed decisions.

Salary:
$70,000 - $90,000 annually based on experience

Schedule:
Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 5 PM

Southfield, MI or Princeton, NJ
