We are looking for a qualified Elevator Inspector 2 who is ready to bring their skills and knowledge of elevators to L&I, the employer of choice.

Our ideal candidate will have the expertise to inspect all types of conveyances located within Washington State in accordance with the agency's policies and procedures for compliance with codes and standards adopted within the scope of WAC 296-96 and RCW 70.87.

We need a skilled individual who can assure compliance by writing reports, issuing code violation corrections, and conduct follow up inspections within the agency's rule and policies to abate corrections.

Additionally, our selected applicant will perform licensing and permitting compliance activities in accordance with those same laws and codes and with customer-centered actions in mind. This is an excellent opportunity to learn and develop your knowledge of elevator codes while applying and ensuring the safety and well-being of the citizens of Washington.

The assigned duty station for this position is Tacoma, Washington.
For these positions, telework is dependent upon business needs and supervisor approval.
For positions where in-office work is necessary, the frequency of telework will be discussed with the supervisor of the position at the time of offer.

Duties

Some of what you will do:


  • Perform inspections of all types of conveyances, ensuring conformance with the laws and rules pertaining to WAC 296-96, RCW 70.87, and national codes and standards adopted under state laws, and per the operation manual and guidelines. The types of inspections performed include annual inspections, alterations inspections, new installations, temporary, and technical inspections.
  • Perform licensing and permitting compliance checks to ensure work is properly performed by qualified authorized persons and registered contractors/companies.
  • Participate in appropriate office standard practices to include keeping office space safe and clean, file reports and inspection documentation per the retention schedule, attend and participate in training relevant to role, and complete online training courses.
  • Required to travel and work in environments that have field or hazardous exposure.
  • May be required to travel and work in other locations throughout the state
  • Research and write reports.
  • Interact verbally and in writing to building officials, elevator contractors, business owners and staff regarding elevator inspections and code related issues.
  • Writes clear and concise inspection reports for owners and staff. Reads and understands blue prints, writing diagrams and schematics.
  • Maintain assigned state vehicle.
  • Assist Chief and/or Technical Specialist to write instructions or guidelines for best inspection practices.
  • Assist Chief and/or Technical Specialist with providing information and conducting educational presentations for training, or instruction to both internal and external staff and stakeholders.
  • Follow all agency internal safety and health policies.
  • And much more.
Other:
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, climb on and off elevator car tops in high places and be able to perform work on the car top and manipulate car top controls.
  • Must be able to inspect in high places.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, reach, clutch and lift when needed.
  • Must wear full-face protective equipment and safety harness in areas, where required and/or wear other required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while carrying out inspection duties.

Qualifications

Required:


  • Four years of experience as an elevator mechanic assistant or elevator mechanic.
OR
  • Four years' experience as an elevator inspector for an authority having jurisdiction (AHJ);
OR
  • Two years' experience of the above and successful completion of the two-year Department of Labor and Industries Elevator Inspector training program.

As well as:
Must possess a valid unrestricted driver’s license to travel to inspection sites.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Open to changing and adaptable to an evolving environment.
  • Relate to people on a diverse one to one level.

Desired:

  • Certified Qualification of Elevator Inspector (QEI) with an accredited organization.
  • Spreadsheet Skills. Skilled in reading spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel. Import data from other sources. The ability to enter data effectively.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations (RCW), WAC's, policies, and procedures that affect the Elevator program.
  • Knowledge in software programs to include email, Microsoft Outlook, Word, .pdf files, and any data entry software.
